Show Rock Creek Canyon road closure schedule announced Heavy construction traffic on Rock Creek road during the final phase of construction of the Upper Stillwater Dam makes closure of the road necessary. Rock Creek Canyon will be closed beginning 8 p.m. on May 28, at the Ashley National Forest boundary, it was announced by Upper Colorado Regional Director Clifford Barrett of the Bureau of Reclamation and Acting Forest Supervisor David A. Kim-brough Kim-brough of Ashley National Forest. After Memorial Day weekend, the canyon will be open to the public from 4:30 p.m. on Fridays each weekend. The road will close again at 8 pm. Sundays. Sun-days. Camping will not be allowed in the canyon during the week. The purpose of the closure during the weekdays is to prevent automobile accidents and personal injury both to the public and to construction workers. During the regular deer hunt in October, Oc-tober, the canyon will be open to the public except for the construction site area. Yellow Pine and Miner's Gulch campgrounds cam-pgrounds are being reconstructed with new facilities and are closed. A fisherman's fisher-man's parking area is also under construction. con-struction. The South Fork Campground Cam-pground in Rock Creek will be open on weekends; it contains five camping units. Some undeveloped camping areas are available in the canyon. The Rock Creek Lodge operated by Richard Glade will be open to the public if construction activities permit. per-mit. The decision to open Is dependent upon the level of construction activities ac-tivities near the resort. The traditional access trail to the High Uintas Primitive Area from Rock Creek is not available because the trail has been severed by the keyway for the Upper Stillwater Dam. However, a new 5-mile section of trail and trailhead has been constructed con-structed bypassing the construction area to provide access to the Primitive Area from Rock Creek. The trail originates in the South Fork of Rock Creek and meets the Fish CreekRock Creek Trail above the construction site. The trail is steep but is very scenic. It can add as much as a half day travel time into the Primitive Area. When the Upper Stillwater Dam is completed, a trail along the west side of the new reservoir will be restored for access to the High Uintas. On weekends throughout this recreation recrea-tion season, visitors to Rock Creek can view the construction activities of the first roller compacted concrete dam to be built by Reclamation from the old trailhead and viewpoint trail. Horses are not allowed on the viewpoint trail due to safety hazards. The actual dam construction site is closed to the public. As in past years, the Blindstream road can be used daily once road conditions con-ditions permit for access into the South Fork of Rock Creek. Construction to improve this road is in progress. The road will receive spot surfacing along with other improvements this summer. The Duchesne Range District of the Ashley National Forest can be contacted con-tacted for current status of campgrounds cam-pgrounds and closure in Hock Creek Canyon. Grease up your bicycle and restring your tennis racket. It's time to get out into the sunshine sun-shine and catch some rays. Wait, think a minute. Just what is the sun doing to your skin? (And keep in mind, it's the only skin you'll ever have.) What price are you paying for that glorious toasty tan? First, of course, there's the burn you have to endure before the lobster red turns to bronze (or peels off). But worse yet is the long-term effects of repeated and intense exposure to the sun's ultraviolet light. It's no joke. The results can be early aging with its lines, wrinkles and general loss of skin flexibility. Of greater concern is the heightened risk of skin cancer, especially to fair-complectioned persons. If you can't bare to go a summer without at least a token gesture of sun worshipping, consider adhering to some of these guidelines. Think moderation. Don't try to get a tan in just one day that looks like you've been in Jamaica all summer. Start out with short stints of about 15 minutes per day. This will give your skin the chance to accumulate a tan which will prevent serious burning. Use sunscreen or sun block. But remember, just because you're under shade doesn't mean the reflected sun rays from sand or water won't affect you. Apply moisture lotions liberally. This will help replace some of the natural oils dissolved by swimming and tanning. Beware of overdoing tanning lotions. These can intensify the affects of the sun. Remember, if you overdo it in the sun, treat your skin gently with a good moisturizer. And chalk it up to experience be more cautious in the sun next time. In Salt Lake City one carrier was awarded $158,000 after being attacked and hospitalized for severe bites from a 100-pound German Shepherd. The Postal Service also went to court and recovered 114,000 hours of salary paid to employees during their injury period.
