Restoring kitchen cabinets Unsightly kitchen cabinets may look as though they have to be refinished, but according to The Soap and Detergent Association they may just need a thorough cleaning. Kitchen cabinets are constantly subject sub-ject to cooking, dishwashing and other activities so they get dirtier than cabinets found elsewhere in the home. Grimy stains concentrate around cabinet handles of doors and drawers and are especially unattractive on light finishes. The longer greasy dirt builds up, the more difficult it becomes to remove. Kitchen soils can generally general-ly be washed off with a solution of detergent and water, if they do not accumulate ac-cumulate for too long. In determining the kind of care required, re-quired, consideration needs to be given to the type of material or finish of the cabinets. Wood, the traditional cabinet material, comes in a variety of finishes. There are the deep, dark tones, the lighter fruit woods, birch and white. Unpainted wooden cabinets are also available that can be painted or stained to coordinate with the kitchen kit-chen decor. . Harlor A major American company com-pany has been working on ways to make work more pleasant and productive for many people. Here are a few of the findings. A work environment combining personal growth with company goals has always al-ways been a guiding philosophy phil-osophy at Polaroid. This philosophy was first expressed ' in the company's compa-ny's research and development develop-ment laboratory, where personnel per-sonnel policies were designed de-signed for people in creative cre-ative roles, unaccustomed to time clocks and close supervision. In the 1960's, efforts to help employees manage their own jobs included replacing re-placing tightly defined assembly as-sembly jobs by a single production pro-duction job classification, "production technician." A group of employees spent three to four months learning learn-ing different production operations, op-erations, materials handling, quality control and other jcbs. Participants also took courses for as long as four hours a day over 15 months, in subjects ranging from English Eng-lish grammar to engineering. In the 1970's, the company com-pany developed the "team concept." Forty persons on three teams volunteered to learn each process in their area to increase flexibility VST One of Alaska's glaciers, Malaspina, is larger than the state of Rhode Island. The finish is scratch-resistant scratch-resistant and easy to clean. All-steel cabinets come in a variety of colors and finishes and those of good quality have a coating of rust-preventative rust-preventative material and a baked-on enamel finish. Regular cleaning will keep any type of kitchen cabinets in good shape. A creamy liquid wax that cleans and waxes helps keep cabinets soil-free. For periodic care of cabinets, washing with a detergent solution may be necessary. An all-purpose household cleaner may also be used. Check package instructions first to be sure that the cleaner can be applied to the type of cabinet surface. Start by wiping the solution over the surface with a cloth. Rinse the cloth in clean water and wring it out. Wipe off the surface thoroughly. Use a clean dry cloth to buff the cabinet dry. This also helps maintain the luster and prevents streaking. A detergent solution solu-tion or household cleaner will usually lift stains from painted, laminated or metal surfaces. F4 it on the shop floor. Besides handling work assignments, team members covered vacations, va-cations, breaks and replacement replace-ment of absent employees. One outcome of the team concept is the Alternative Alter-native Individual Methods of Manufacturing (AIMM) program at a camera assembly assem-bly plant. In AIMM, each employee builds cameras from start to finish, designing his or her own way to meet the daily quota. Besides improvement im-provement in worker satisfaction, satis-faction, cooperation and conscientiousness, there has been a 35 percent increase in productivity, while quality qual-ity has been maintained. Quality circles introduced in 1979 further encourage employee involvement and improve job satisfaction. Quality circle members are volunteers who meet regularly regu-larly on company time to identify and analyze work-related work-related problems and recommend recom-mend solutions. The company has also developed educational programs pro-grams to enhance workers' skills and to broaden their areas of expertise. Over 100 courses designed to improve job performance and achieve promotions are attended each year by some 1500 Polaroid employees. Although we have yet to achieve the working environment environ-ment in which everyone manages his or her own job, we are confident that we will continue to make progress prog-ress in this direction.
