Lester shot the four point buck behind him. An estimated 200,000 Utah hunters invaded the hills, Saturday for the general deer hunting opener and many were happy hunters as they gained bucks in the Northeastern Region. The opener in the Vernal area took place during clear, blue skies and under a bright sun. One of the many happy hunters during dur-ing the opener was Rick Hill of Vernal who garnered a five point buck. Hills' hunting party camped out in the Range Study Area. "I got my buck two miles south of here. It was 20 to 25 feet away from me when I shot it. I saw some two and three point bucks, but they weren't close enough to shoot. I watched seven does and the buck was trailing them. I was about to give up and then I saw the antlers coming. He cleared some trees and then I got him early Saturday Satur-day morning," stated Hill. "We saw a lot of deer. We saw from a dozen to a dozen and a half, but they were mostly most-ly does and a few bucks." Dean Wilkes pocketed a buck with three points on one side and two on the other side. "I shot my buck at 10 a.m. Saturday morning two miles up the road. I saw some deer going into the trees and pushed them out. I walked through the trees and they came out in the clear. I was right under it and in the right spot. I was 35 to 40 yards away when I shot it," remarked Wilkes. Vernal hunter Sheldon Seitz was pleased with the deer opener as he gained a two point buck. "I got my buck at about 9 a.m. I was about 300 yards away when I shot it. There were four deer in the same area," commented com-mented Seitz. Leasa Petty's father gained a buck on the opening day of the hunt. The buck had three points on one side and two on the other. "My dad got his buck down in the draw in the Little V as soon - as it got light," said Petty,. - v When asked to comment on the general deer opener, Chad Crosby of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources in the Northeastern Region remarked, "We have had a lot of pressure. We have as much deer hunting hun-ting pressure as in years past. So far the hunting success has been fair to good as of 2: 35 p.m. Saturday. We are seeing a lot of two point bucks and not too many big ones. We checked three four point bucks when we set up a road block. It has been good hunting for the first day." Another happy hunter during the opener was Randy Lewis of Salt Lake City. "The three of us got a buck each. We got them down here on the face at about 7:30 a.m. We got one spike and two two point bucks. I shot one and Barbara Lewis and Daryll Leavitt gained gain-ed the other bucks." The group was camped in the Range Study Area. Dennis Eaton of Vernal enjoyed the sunny day as he gained a buck Saturday. Satur-day. "The hunting hasn't been too bad this morning. My wife got a spike and I got a two point buck. We got the bucks down through the V. We had them both by 8:25 a.m. We started when the sun came up. We had the first one before 7:30 a.m. and got the second se-cond one in 20 minutes. We were back in camp at 8:30 a.m. We saw a lot of small deer," remarked Eaton. Another hunter, Steve Shiner remarked, "I got a little one, a two point, down on the face at about 8 a.m. I saw a few does. The hunt has been better for me." "I got a two point in the Little V up by the gorge. I got it at about 8 a.m. I was about 100 to 125 yards away when I shot it. He was a little bit away. I saw a lot of deer. It has been an unbelievable hunt this year. A lot of deer have been taken out of here-right here-right in this area. The biggest one I saw come out of here was a four point buck," said Salt Lake City hunter, Arthur Ar-thur Stone. Brent Dyson's hunting party was camped in the Red Springs Campground. Camp-ground. "I got a pretty nice two point over on Diamond Mountain. I was 100 yards away when I shot it. We saw a lot of deer and missed a lot of shots," stated Dyson. Another member of the Dyson hun-ting hun-ting party v Dick Dyson, statedi'I missed some big ones. I couldn't hit them. There are quite a few deer. I wouldn't have seen them if it wasn't for the kids." Verda Edge of Salt Lake City was a happy hunter as she gained a two point buck. "We got it around the bend, a couple of miles up on the right side of the road. I got it down through the trees and not too far off the highway. I didn't have too far to drag it," remarked Edge. Edge gained her buck in Daggett County. "Hunting has been fair at Blue Mountain. We didn't see anything there," said Dennis Laris of Roosevelt. you know how to fish," commented Sanders. "Deer hunting has been great. I shot one four point buck. I got it southwest of the potholes. I shot the deer at about 8: 30 a.m. The deer was real close, but I had to wait for the deer to go past . some cattle before I shot the four point. That gets you real excited," said Lester Blanchard of Salt Lake City. The hunting party also gained a spike and two-point buck Saturday morning. The Slater hunting party enjoyed an extremely happy opener Saturday as five members of the group gained a buck. "We shot two spikes, two 2-point bucks and one four point. Gordon.
