Not a separate season within itself, Indian Summer, is a portion of time that ranges between a week and ten to fourteen days before winter begins. After the first of autumn when a chilly period is experienced, the warmer mild days of Indian Summer last until winter. The sky at this time is a rich blue, the sun soft and hazy, and the warmer days are followed by chilly nights. The leaves are turning colors and beginn-. beginn-. ing to fall from the trees, and the horizon appears gentle and blurred. This period of warmer weather is created by a mass of warm tropical air. Southern wind carries the large air masses northward over the country. coun-try. During the time of Indian Summer the air masses remain still, causing the weather to remain clear and mild. The time of Indian Summer is also known as fall because of the falling leaves of autumn. The leaves fall from the trees and change color because of a shortage of food. In late summer and early autumn, the area where the leaf joins the tree turns to cork. The cork layer slowly grows, spreading, and eventually even-tually blocks the food pipeline from the tree to and from the leaf. The vein system of the leaf is then totally cut off. Without water, the leaf stops making mak-ing food and the chlorophyll begins to break down. The colors that the leaves then turn are the underlying colors in the leaf that have been there all the time. Bright yellow, orange-yellow, red and purple hues then appear. The autumn color of each kind of tree or shrub depends on the amount of the compounds that make up chlorophyll that the leaf has in it after the beakdown. After the leaf falls from the tree it lies on the ground, being softened by rain and bacteria. After the material of the leaf is dissolved the remains are washed into the earth to nourish the new plants that await spring. iV.YTHE DISPERSAL ot seeds as the milkweed plant prepares M for winter gives a waiting atmosphere for the season to come.
