ADAM SPENCER The Park Record Less than a minute into Thursday afternoon's game, the Park City High School boys' soccer team found itself trailing Logan 1-0 in the first round of the 3A playoffs. The Miners quickly regrouped, shaking off the early struggles and scoring the tying goal 15 minutes later. From there, though, the Grizzlies rebounded and controlled the rest of the match, taking a 3-1 lead into halftime and eventually earning a 5-1 victory. Though the end result was disappointing, Park City Coach Tom Merchant said the early part of the match was fairly even. "It was an unfortunate first minute there," he said. "The nice part was we responded to it well. Maybe 15 minutes in, we tied it up, which showed some spark. "But we met a strong opponent in Logan. I wish them all the best going forward." Speaking of going forward, the Miners are in a good position for next season, Merchant said. Park City only played two seniors at the varsity level - Greg Shagen and Kyle Webster. "Although we will miss our two senior varsity players, that leaves us a very strong squad going forward that's learning to play together," Merchant said. "I think we'll be stronger and stronger in the future." Plus, Merchant added, some of the JV players will be added to the varsity mix next year, which will help increase the Miners' depth on the bench. "What will make it challenging is we have a lot of players at the younger levels who will be vying for playing time at the top level," he said. "We thrive on that, though. If you're a player who doesn't like competition, you're in the wrong spot. It's very healthy for us to have that competition." Park City finished with an overall record of 5-10. Matt Gregory scored the goal for Park City, with Cole Stanton picking up the assist. Though the Miners only scored one goal, Merchant said the offense had more chances than the score would indicate. "As one-sided as the score was, we had some good opportunities in front of the goal," he said. "We didn't produce, which has been a problem this year. But we were able to get some attack going forward. It wasn't all playing on our end." Defensively, Merchant said the Grizzlies' speed gave the Miners problems for most of the game. "They were a fast team on the outside and put some pressure on our flanks that we had hoped to respond to better," he said. Though Park City finished the Region 10 season on a high note and compiled a 5-3 record, tiebreakers with Grantsville forced the Miners into the No. 3 seed. That made things more difficult, Merchant said, since the No. 2 seed gets to host the first-round game. The South Summit High School track team is coming into the last month of the track season with some great performances having already taken place. One of the big stars on the team is senior Isaac Tillett, who last year broke the 2A Utah state record in the 400-meter race with a time of 48.60 seconds and, last Saturday at the Tiger Trials in Orem, broke the 2A Utah state record in the 100 with a time of 10.78 seconds. Last year at the state meet, Tillett placed first in the 100, 200 and 400 and is looking to do the same this year. Another outstanding four-year senior is Brady Bess. He did extremely well last week, posting some of his fastest times of the year in the 100 and 200 sprints. He also anchored the boys 4x100 relay team to a third-place finish with a school-record time of 43.15 seconds. Alex Stockley, a senior who just transferred to South Summit this year, has been a great addition to the team. He has consistently brought his times down in all of his events. His performance on Saturday in the 100 places him with the third-fastest time in 2A this year. He also has excellent times in the 200 and 400 sprints. Senior Mason Gines is another integral part of the record-breaking 4x100 team and is turning in great performances in the high jump and long jump as well. Another four-year senior is James Scow. He has been stellar in all three throwing events (discus, shot put and javelin), along with the high jump, for the past two years. He has been in the finals for almost every event at every meet he has attended. He is currently ranked in the top five for the javelin and shot put in 2A. The track team also traveled to Wendover last Friday to qualify for certain events at the upcoming BYU Invitational. Those qualifying for events were freshmen Chaylee Larson, Claire Iverson and Logan Davis. Sophomore Jackson Ayres, junior Jackson Dean and senior Porter Fitzgerald also qualified in their respective events. The girls' medley relay team made up of Larson, Ashley Stockley, Jordyn Crandall and Abby Laswell also qualified to run at BYU. Three relay teams placed first at Wendover - the girls' medley, boys' medley and boys' 4x400. "We have some great kids on this team and they have been making some very good progress throughout the season," Coach Mike Grajek said. "We are certainly looking forward to region and state." This weekend, the Wildcats will travel to Provo for the BYU Invitational. On May 11, they will travel to Coalville for the Region 16 Track Meet being held at North Summit High School. The 2A State Track Meet will take place on May 20 and 21 at BYU. |
