Show The Park Record A-4 Wed/Thurs/Fri, December 2-4, 2015 Parade will light up Coalville Second annual holiday celebration to be held Dec. 12 ANGELIQUE McNAUGHTON The Park Record Coalville City officials are hoping hundreds of residents, and maybe even a little snow, will descend on Main Street for the second annual Light Parade Celebration to kick off the holiday season. "We anticipate it will be quite a bit more successful than it was last year, which was our first year," said Mayor Trever Johnson. "Last year it started snowing right when the parade started and everyone loved it. It's Christmas, inclement weather is encouraged." Crowds of people are expected to fill Main Street for the celebration, which will feature free donuts and hot cocoa, drawings and contests, a tree lighting ceremony, live entertainment and a visit from Santa. Officials are hoping the community gathering becomes a longstanding tradition for the county seat's residents. "It's just a way for everyone to get together and enjoy the holiday season," Johnson said. "Grab a neighbor, come out and have some hot chocolate and be a part of the Christmas spirit." This year's parade is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at 150 South and will end at FALL SPECIALS Tuesdays - Kids EAT Free Wednesdays - ALL YOU CAN EAT BBQ FOOTBALL Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays Hide Out Drink & Food Specials $3 PBR's • $5 Bloodys • $6 Wings • $6 Nachos NFL Sunday Ticket Bandits' Grill & Bar • 440 Main Street • Park City www.banditsbbq.com • 435-649-7337 100 North. Following the parade, Main Street will be closed between 40 North and 20 South. The event coincides with the city's shop local initiative, during which residents can receive raffle tickets for every $20 they spend at participating businesses. "Years and years ago, Coalville used to have this raffle for the businesses and they would donate something and it was a big community event," Johnson said. "What we have done is kind of resurrected that and added the parade. It's just kind of a fun, warm community gathering." Tickets will be distributed through Dec. 6 at participating businesses and can then be brought to City Hall until 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 to be entered into the drawing. "Two weeks prior to the parade we give local business tickets and the ticket goes into a raffle where we have had local businesses that have donated stuff and we will have drawings," Johnson said. "Last year the drawings went on for two hours. It was pretty successful, but people were getting a little a impatient so we have streamlined the process." Last year, only three floats were initially signed up, but more than 30 ended up taking part in the event, Johnson said. More than a 1,000 people attended. "We were quite pleasantly surprised. We had all sorts of floats: farm equipment, large semitrucks, pickups," Johnson said. "I encourage anyone to contact City Hall and get a float and get it entered. Some of them get pretty elaborate so come out and have a good time." Entries for the parade will be accepted through Dec. 11, at 1 p.m., according to Coalville City Recorder Niki Sargent. However, she said "we would still accept them anytime." "It's mainly to give the announcers time to get ready for the parade," Sargent said. "But we'll accept anything and we'll squeeze you in there. I've only had three sign up, but it's still early. Last year, we hoped to just get 10 and then we ended up with 33. Some of the floats were very elaborate, but most were just fun." Cash prizes will be given to the best float entries for three different categories. The best adult and youth costume winner will also receive $100. Volunteers will judge both competitions. After the parade, carolers will sing Christmas tunes and a stage will feature local live music. "It was just really fun and it turned out really good last year," Sargent said. "It was our first year and we were worried about doing it, but the businesses and people were fantastic and it was just a great night. Everyone received it really well and we were thrilled beyond belief. I hope it turns out that well again this year." Coalville City's Light Parade Celebration is scheduled to be held Saturday, Dec. 12 and will begin at 6 p.m. on the south end of Main Street. A tree lighting ceremony in front of City Hall will follow the parade.
