Show The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, August 15-18, 2015 Miners back in region race PCHS boys' golf wins two Region 10 matches ADAM SPENCER The Park Record In two Region 10 matches last week in Roosevelt and Vernal, the Park City High School boys' golf team, playing without senior co-captain Mitchell Schow, fell 12 strokes behind Tooele in the region standings. This week, with Schow back and senior Drew Fleming, the other co-captain, leading the way, the Miners climbed back to within two strokes of the region lead after two more tournaments in Tooele. Schow came back playing well, shooting a 5-under-par 67 on the Thursday after turning in an even-par score on Wednesday. Fleming shot a 3-under 69 on Wednesday and an even-par 72 on Thursday. Thursday's tournament featured some young players stepping up in big ways, with freshman Jack Wright shooting a 1-under 71 and Zane Schemmer turning in a score of 75 to round out the top four for Park City. After getting good performances from freshman Dean Tsandes and sophomore Jack Hanskat last week, Coach George Murphy said he likes how many scoring threats the Miners have this year. "We had some different kids step up and shoot some low scores," he said. "Any number of these kids, if they're on and playing well, can make a score." In Wednesday's match, Park City beat second-place Tooele 296-302. The Miners followed that up on Thursday by winning 285-289. Tooele leads the Region 10 race through four matches, 1,196 to 1,198. Third-place Union has a stroke total of 1,275. Murphy said it's important to PARK RECORD FILE PHOTO Mitchell Schow tees off during a tournament at Park Meadows last year. "They're young kids and sometimes, when they find themselves in situations where they're playing well, they need to expect to score and be one of the players on the team that posts [a top-four score]," he said. "It's a big thing. They're learning how to keep their rounds together. We need to keep doing what we're doing. Different kids are stepping up on different days." Murphy said Schow and Fleming are great leaders, cheering on the freshmen and sophomores as they put together solid rounds. "The older kids are excited for the younger kids," he said. "There's a lot of excitement all around." After running away with the Region 10 title in past seasons, Murphy said there are some positives to having a challenge from Tooele after the region realignments. "It's nice for a change to mix it up and see how they play in a different region with different courses and different challenges," he said. "It's good to see how they respond." The Miners return to the course on Wednesday, playing in Tooele for the third tournament in a row, this time at Stansbury's home course. Murphy said the Miners need to worry more about their mechanics and hitting the best shot they can than about what Tooele is doing. "We just need to take it one stroke at a time and focus on the shots we have and go from there," he said. Park City's first home match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at Park City Golf Course.
