Holiday marked by DUIs Sheriff's office kept busy as summer begins By SARAH MOFFITT The Park Record Marking the beginning of a busy summer season for law enforcement, Memorial Day weekend brought reports of multiple arrests, traffic violations and alcohol problems for the Summit County Sheriff's Office. According to Summit County Sheriff's Office Detective Sergeant Ron Bridge, extra deputies were out this weekend patrolling the county and state roads thanks to additional state and federal funding. Bridge said the Sheriff's office pulled over and arrested multiple people for driving under the influence of alcohol and found illegal drugs in numerous vehicles. "We found everything from marijuana to methamphetamine paraphernalia in cars throughout the county when we pulled people over," he said. "We also made multiple arrests due to people driving under the influence." Bridge said the increase in arrests is nothing new for a holiday weekend, especially Memorial Day. "It is the start of summer and people want to recreate as much as possible," he said. "We have extra patrols out just for this reason, to keep the roads safe and make sure people are following the law." The Sheriff's office also made four arrests during its "shoulder tap" operation at convenience and grocery stores throughout the county. The Sheriff's office shoulder tap program employes minors to ask people to buy them alcohol. We arrested three adults and one juvenile during the operation on Saturday night," Bridge said, adding that the juvenile was arrested for consuming alcohol. "The three adults were arrested for furnishing minors with alcohol at various locations." Saturday was the third time the Sheriff's office has conducted a shoulder tap operation. Bridge said the last time they did it, four adults were arrested for purchasing alcohol for minors. The Sheriff's office did not respond to any major vehicle or recreational accidents over the weekend. According to the Sheriff's report, there was a minor ATV accident near Strawberry Reservoir on Friday and a semi-truck rollover in the Snyderville Basin on Interstate 80 on Sunday.
