Built in 1942, the 192-seat venue has shown everything from "Singing in the Rain" to "Star Wars" on its 24- x 11-foot screen. Thousands of moviegoers have filled the seats eating their fill of popcorn and enjoyed drama, romance and fantasy alike. Each film was accompanied by the familiar click-clack of the two 35mm projectors installed in the projection room in the 1980s. Also during the past decade, the Sundance Film Festival has used the Kamas Theater for its screenings, but that won't happen this year. Sundance opted not to use the Kamas Theater facilities said Kevin Harris, who, along with his wife Sharee, have run the theater since May. "A few months ago, I called Sundance because we hadn't heard anything from them and we were informed they wouldn't be screening films here because we weren't digital, meaning we didn't have a digital projector," Harris told The Park Record. "It shocked us, but it seems that's what's been happening everywhere, because the (movie) studios have informed us that within a year, they won't be making movies in the 33mm format, so we have to become digital if we're going to be able to serve Kamas." What Harris says rings true because even the Jim Santy Auditorium at the Park City Library and Education Center had to remove its old 16mm projector earlier this week to make way for a new digital projector. The Harris' have since been looking into getting a digital projector, not only for Sundance purposes, but to continue showing films. However, a single unit costs $65,000. "That's a chunk of change that we don't have, and so we are trying to figure out how to get one," Harris said. "We've shopped around and there are some that cost a lot more than that, and that's not even considering playing 3-D films. The $65,000 is just for a basic projector that will show standard digital films." Finding a used projector isn't an option, because the format is new, said Sharee Harris. "There are older digital projectors, but they all need upgrades and that would cost about the same as getting a new one," she said. If the Kamas Theater doesn't get a new projector, the Harris' will have to shut it down. 2 for GRAYSON WEST / PARK RECORD Sharee Harris, top, hand feeds 35mm film into the Kamas Theater projector to prepare for a screening. The seats and projection windows of the theater, right, have provided comfortable entertainment for South Summit County audiences for years. The Kamas Theater, left, has shown films for 70 years, but is in danger of closing within the next year because it lacks a digital projector. A basic projector will cost the Harris' at least $65,000. "We can't take out a loan because we're not making enough money to take on that kind of debt," Sharee said. "There are some people who are telling us we don't have to change, but it's getting to the point if we want to keep the doors open, we have to upgrade." The Harris' have already felt the 1 Entree I T A L I A N RESTAURANT 435-645-0636 151 Main St. Valid: January 14 through January 18 bite of running a non-digital theater in the past months. "It's even hard to get some of the films that are still being made as 35mm," Sharee said. "We've had to do some middle-of-the-night trips to other theaters like in Roosevelt to get them, because it's too expensive to ship the big reels." 2 for The film arrives on separate reels that measure 13 to 15 inches in diameter. "When we get them, my husband splices them together to fit on the bigger projector reels and then we 1 Entree No Cash Accepted CA FE 435-647-0880 1250 Ironhorse Dr. Ghidotti's No Cash Accepted 435-615-0300 577 Main St. Cash not accepted, this is a credit card promotion.
