Please see Town Race, B-3 Parker relieved of basketball duties After consecutive trips to 2A state final, South Summit head basketball coach ousted By CHRISTOPHER KAMRANI Of the Record staff After consecutive trips to the 2A state championship game - one resulting in a state title - South Summit boys' basketball head coach Jerry Parker was dismissed from the post Monday. According to South Summit School District Superintendent Barry Walker, the decision to relieve Parker of his head basketball coaching duties had "nothing to do with Parker's coaching record or win-loss record." Walker added: "We were very pleased and very excited with (Parker's) success as basketball coach." Walker said he wanted to stop any rumors that the decision was related to South Summit's loss to South Sevier in this year's 2A title game. Nor did it reflect any ethical breaches on Parker's part as a teacher and head coach. "It has nothing to do with ethical behavior," Walker said. "He was a supreme coach on and off the floor." After three years as South Summit's head basketball coach, Parker had a combined record of 48-26, including a 17-8 campaign in 2010 when the team won the 2A state title, defeating Waterford 3837. South Summit was one of the best teams in 2A again this season, finishing second in the state with an overall record of 20-5, which included a 19-game winning streak. Parker, who is a South Summit alumnus, will continue to serve as head football coach at the school. In his second stint as the Wildcats' head football coach, Parker has accumulated 42 wins in six years and has taken South Summit to the state championship game the last two years. Parker was previously dismissed from the football head coaching job at his alma mater in 1994, after three years at the team's helm. Walker added that the position of head basketball coach at South Summit is not officially open and that the "direction has not totally moved on yet." Walker also said Parker has a chance to file a grievance with the district and seek reinstatement as head basketball coach. South Summit principal Gary Twitchell and athletic director Troy Coil were not immediately available to comment. Parker declined comment on the situation. OPEN HOUSE!
