Show B-11 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November 22-25, 2008 Calling all Utah bird watchers .8 • Submitted by 'the Cornell Lab of Ornithology r '•Ithaca, NY -- Bird watchers in Utah are seeing big changes, an'd they don't even need to leave home to notice new species in their yards. T h e Eurasian Collared-Dove, a large tan bird with a black ring or "collar" on the neck, is rapidly colonizing North America, and Utah is on the front lines of this invasion. Scientists are asking Utah's bird watchers to help track these and other changes at their feeders by participating in Project FeederWatch. "FeederWatch is fun and easy," says project leader David Bonter from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "While you're enjoying the birds, take a few minutes to count and record them." Last winter, 13% of FeederWatch participants in Utah recorded the invasive Eurasian Collared-Dove at their feeders, The species was rarely detected as recently as five years ago. "We need to hear from more bird watchers in Utah to get an accurate picture of what's happening with bird populations from year to year." says Bonter. ' T h e 2008-09 season of Project FeederWatch is underway and runs through April 3. Participants can sign up at any time. FeederWatchers track the numbers and kinds of birds seen at feeders each week and then send the information to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The information they provide helps generate the world's largest database on feeder-bird populations. "Scientists learn something new from the project each year." says Bonter, "whether it's about the movements of common backyard birds or unusual sightings of rarely seen species. Will the Eurasian Collared-Dove have an impact on populations of native doves? Scientists need information from throughout the state to help answer the question, and anyone who sees birds at feeders can help." ,• FeederWatchers across North America submitted more than W5.000 checklists during the 2007{)(•* season, documenting unusual tyrd sightings, winter movements, and shifting rangesinformation scientists use to monitor the health of the birds and of the environment. To learn more and to sign up, visit www.feederwatch.org or call (800) 843-2473. In return for the $15 fee ($12 for Lab members) participants receive the FeederWatcher's Handbook, a bird-identification poster, a calendar, instructions, and the FeederWatch annual report. Christmas bird count held in Heber Submitted by Utah State Parks Midway - Local birders and nature enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 109th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27 at the Wasatch Mountain State Park Visitor Center. Beginner, intermediate and expert birders are welcome to participate. Cost is $5 per person or free for those 18 and under or participating through feeder watching. Participants are encouraged to attend a free, basic bird identification class scheduled Saturday, Dec. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wasatch Mountain State Park Visitor Center. The course is designed to assist participants with basic field identification. Count results are included in the Audubon's Slate of the Birds Reports, which not only shape conservation initiatives, but have made news around the world. The last Christmas Bird Count in the Heber Valley took place in 20002001. Reactivating this count will fill an important gap in Utah bird data. The Christmas Bird Count began more than one century ago when scientist Frank Chapman changed the course of ornithological history. In 1900, Chapman led a small group on an alternative to the side hunt, when teams competed to see who could shoot the most game. Instead, Chapman pr»tpo>eu they identify, count and record all the birds they saw, founding what is now considered to be the world's most significant citizen-based conservation effort.
