Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, March 19-21, 2008 The Park Record C-4 ee M ARCH roscope \9 , "ZOO3 ARIES: (MARCH 20 - APRIL 18) You know about charm. But did you know that charming people are, on average, more successful than those who are less so? Tip: think of all kinds of ways to say "thank you" to everyone you encounter. They are "win- win wonds far sure. TAURUS: (APRIL 1 9 - M A Y 20) Just as many serious writers shut out the world in order to draw together their thoughts, so you must schedule chunks of time when you ignore your phone and swear off surfing the web. During these quiet times the mind is nourished. • GEMINI: (MAY 21 -JUNE 20) Be forewarned: A case of refrigerator blindness is about to afflict you - not as the literal interpretation of the phrase suggests though. It has to do with your inability to spot, and then take in, the obvious facts before you. CANCER: (JUNE 21 -JULY 22) "The March wind roars like a lion in the sky, and makes us shiver as he passes by." Saying farewell to March is not difficult. Set your sights on putting the raw days of winter behind you and welcoming the milder winds of April. LEO: (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22) Lions are likable, loyal A N D - MARCH loathe to admitting their mistakes. Ifs this last characteristic that could stand some attention. You're above the fray in many ways, but one reality is inescapable - like all of us, you are fallible. VIRGO: (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Ponder this: Generally we don't figure out what's wrong with us when we are feeling well. So, if you're not at your best, consider this an opportunity to get at the root cause of your annoyances. Log what you eat; take nature walks. LIBRA: (SEPTEMBER 23 OCTOBER 22) Flaws are in the eye of the beholder. Are time-faded . markings, carved into your furniture by the busy hands of kids (or grandkias), a disfigurement? O r are they a durable reminder of the frivolous, devil-may-care nature of youth? SCORPIO: (OCTOBER 2 3 NOVEMBER 21) Daily minutia has you bogged down. Being preoccupied with the discharging of responsibilities limits your capacity for seeing the broader picture. Big plans and long term goals may get short shrift. The brass ring needs grabbing. SAGITTARIUS: (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) Easily resistant to threats, and arguments filled with cunning logic, you are much more susceptible to an 21/ ZOOS approach full of openness and simple honesty. This week, a loved one may figure you out and catch you with your defenses down. CAPRICORN: (DECEMBER 2 2 - J A N U A R Y 19) Fellow Capricorns include physicist Stephen Hawking and rock stars David Bowie and Elvis. What's the common thread? They all have had a solidity of purpose in their chosen field; they've made a massive impact on life around them. AQUARIUS: (JANUARY 20 FEBRUARY 18) There is a reason for wearing camouflage. Sometimes blending in is necessary for survival. Sometimes being the maverick is just too risky, too isolating. Stifle your natural rebelliousness this week; be one with the crowd. PISCES: (FEBRUARY 19 MARCH 19) Burger King's slogan says, "Have it your way" - and that's music to your ears. Lest you allow that active imagination of yours to run wild, they only mean cheese, onions, extra ketchup and such. Sorry, no sweeping wishes granted here. IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS . MARCH 2: You share your birthday with Dana Carvey and Emmylou Harris. Idealistic, honest, and the underdog's champion, experience is your preferred teacher. BY MINERVA The L.A. Noted albatross slayer California's Beach Tree Room weclomes eclectic mix Submitted By The Sundance Resort The Sundance Resort begins its sixth year of the Tree Room Author Series with an eclectic array of topics and authors who explore everything from politics and religion to the environment. In addition, a leading author of fiction, as well as the author of a bestselling memoir rounds out the series to provide insight into their world of story telling. The 2008 Tree Room Author Series dates and authors are as follows: March 29 "Earth: The Sequel - The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Wanning" byFredKrupp Krupp serves as president of Environmental Defense, a national non profit organization that links science, economics, law and innovative private-sector partnerships to create breakthroughs. Krupp's expertise led him to pen a book that not only warns about impending effects of global warming, but also inspires a new edict for eliciting change and relating the ideas and innovations of some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The result is a new call to arms: We can solve global warming and in doing so, we will build the new industries, jobs, and fortunes of the twenty-first century. May 3 "The Girl with No Shadow" by Joanne Harris Joanne Harris rediscovers the world of Vianne and Anouk, the beloved mother and daughter of the enchanting, Chocolat, and takes us along for their next journey. The author notes that this book is not a sequel, and she was not exactly planning to revisit the characters. "Besides, I had other books to write, other characters clamouring for my attention. There might one day be something else about Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk, but I had a feeling they weren't in Lansquenet any more, and I had no idea of where else to start looking for them. As far as I knew, Vianne was gone, and until I found out where she was, then any chance of a follow-up (still less a sequel) was most definitely out," comments the author. It was the Harris's daughter, Anouchka, who was also the prototype for Anouk, who inspired the author to rediscover the world of Vianne and Anouk. The result is a charming confection just as delightful as its predecessor. September 20 u Marley & Me: Life and Love with the Worlds Worst Dog" by John Grogan John Grogran was an award winning journalist when he wrote the ode to what he calls "the world's worst dog." This memoir quickly became a number one bestseller, as Grogan chronicles how Marley goes from a trouble maker of a yellow lab to the heart of a loving family. Grogan will discuss Marley, life and love. His denial is hard to believe. In one scene after anotherof this movie, written and directed by Mark Obcnhaus, skiers hurtle down slopes at angles of 55 degrees or greater and leap off precipices into the unknown, the tiniest miscalculation, we are repeatedly told, could result in death. The movie, photographed in high-definition video by Erich Roland, is an undeniably impressive visual spectacle that follows the sport from Wyoming to France, British Columbia, Iceland and Alaska. Like that of its sister sport, surfing, extreme skiing has a history of one feat topping another as tcchiques are developed and challenges devised. The worldwide search for the highest wave is paralled by the search for the steepest, wildest, most dangrous slopes and for perfect snow. Perfection is to be found, according to the movie, in the extreme-skiing mecca of Valdez, Alaska, where the white stuff has the texture of velvet. -By Stephen Holden March 21-23, 2008 • Fri. & Sat. 8:00pm - Sun. 6:00pm Santy Auditorium * 1255 Park Avenue Underwritten by Cole Sport I Call 615.8291 or for Info, previews & reviews visit www.parkcltyfllmseries.com park .f c i t y ^swwr V HONDA. / W CITY, |
