BROWN The Denver Post If plaid fabrics conjure images of drab, ill-fitting school uniforms, the fashions in store this fall will be a refreshing update. Designers have styled traditional tartans in unusual ways. They've treated plaids to a fresh palette of colors, played with size, shrinking patterns or enlarging them. They've layered plaid pieces with a variety of garments and accessories to come up with unexpected outfits. So prevalent is the trend that it was seen in both the European and American collections. In Paris, designer John Paul Gaultier went on a Highland fling, showing jackets and kilts in oversized red or yellow plaids, and plaid taffeta coats. Stateside, prep king Tommy Hilfigcr dressed models in tartan dresses and plaid-lined toggle coats. Unlike some fashion trends offered just for teens or targeted to their moms, plaid appeals across the board this fall. In the juniors departments, girls are finding plaid miniskirts in funky color combinations, cropped jackets, shorts and skinny pants. And yes, the schoolgirl look is evident in plaid jumpers, jackets and shoes. For the teen's slightly older sister there are slim dresses, doublebreasted coats and "neo-grunge"style cotton flannel plaid tops or tunics and skirts. Women looking for office attire will find everything from plaid jackets in the season's de rigueur cropped shapes to trench coats in silk. While originally made from wool, designers are also using everything from cotton to chiffon in their plaid creations. • Some of it has a borrowed-fromthfc-boys appeal, especially menswcar-inspired plaid vests worn with white shirts and jeans. Rachael Donaldson of Product Denver, a style coach, says plaid can be a great addition to either a classic or fashion-forward wardrobe, but says women need to keep a couple of things in mind when they wear it. "It's one of those fabrics like can look chic when you wear it well" but can be overpowering and unflattering if a woman doesn't keep her figure in mind, Donaldson says. Here arc her tips: • Wear a plaid jacket with a solid-color skirt or dress, or a plaid jumper lopped with a solid sweater or jacket. • A plaid jacket with an interesting collar will draw attention to your face and neckline, a technique Donaldson says her clients like. • If you're concerned that plaid will make you look overweight, opt for one with a darker background. or an overall more muted color palette. • If the garment has pockets, make sure the pattern lines up, and check that seams align to avoid a visual moire" effect. • Plaid accessories are a way to adopt the trend without going overboard. Plaid pumps or oxfords look fashionable with a solid dress or suit, as do plaid flats worn with skinny pants or a knee-length skirt or sheath. • Wear other pieces that play off the plaid aesthetic, such as a touch of lace or a patent leather belt. • Plaid pants should be reserved for the young, svelte and longlegged. When in doubt, go for the classics. "Plaid doesn't have to be a trendy thing. That's why it comes back over and over," Donaldson says. "Think of Burberry scarves and bags. They slip into your wardrobe and can be worn forever. Buy the best you can afford that makes sense for your wardrobe." Slapstick comedy flicks on DVD By LISA KENNEDY The Denver Post "Blades of Glory," two and a half out of four stars, PG-13, 90 minutes, released Tuesday. Old-school slapstick meets newer-school gross-out gags in "Blades of Glory," a chuckle-worthy if slight comedy about the world's first male figure-skating pair. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder The ^^^^ star as rivals banned from singles skating after a brawl. To return to the only thing they're good at, they compete as a pair. Craig T. Nelson plays their coach, natch. Rated PG-13. "Blades" is a very silly send-up of Lycra'd lunacy that avoids the thin ice of being an extended joke about men partnering. "Blades" isn't glorious. It may not even be as funny as the movie it pays fab homage to: "The Cutting Edge." Bui then that was a drama. "Year of the Dog." two and a half out of four stars, PG-13, 95 minutes, released Tuesday. In writer Mike White's directorial debut. Peegv loses her best ^ friend, her beagle. Pencil. What happens after this death in the family is the stuff of bitter comedy and a sweet-strange transformation. Played by Molly Shannon, Peggy teeters on disaster and the possibility of personal peace. Her other best friend is Layla, Regina King doing serious "girlfriend" duty here. Most of the hUmans here are uncomfortable in their furless skins. There's pet-adoption specialist Newt (Peter Sarsgaard). Laura Dem is fabulous as Peggy's sister-in-law. Neighbor Al (John C. Reilly) is sort of kind, definitely clueless and possibly the catalyst of Pencil's demise. Summit Comity ^ ^ ^ ^ Serving oervtng onmmn county since since 1880 ioau ^ Park Record S.J ! • • , : • .
