By ADIA WALDBURGER Of (he Record staff The Triple Crown Girls Fast-Pitch Softball World Series is getting a bit more sassy this summer. What was already one of the most successful girls fast-pitch softball tournaments in the area ha been re-vamped this year to make the three weeks of competition more exciting for the athletes and the community. The changes are thanks in part to Triple Crown tournament director Bill Walters, arguably the busiest man in softball. Besides spear-heading the annual tournament, this year he donned a marketing hat and looked for ways to make the event more exciting for everyone involved. And he's serious about it. "We're spicing things up. That's our philosophy," said Walters. He said that attracting teams to Park City is no problem, but he wanted to make sure that everyone knew how to enter the tournament and that their time, once they arrived, would be well spent. "The town sells itself, I just had to let people know how to get in," Walters said. He said that most participants make the annual trip to Park City a family vacation, so it only made sense to make things more fun. The event will now open every Monday at Deer Valley at 6 p.m. with a, large party of sorts at the Snow Park Outdoor Ampitheatre. The teams will have the chance to play the video game Guitar Hero on a large screen set up at the base of the hill, with the winner being declared the Park SPORTS CALENDAR 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday Weather Hotline (cancellations) 615-5432 Summer Sports Bike Racing Intermountaln Cup Series Sherwood Hills July 7 8 a.m. 20th Annual Mountain Bout July 14 8 a.m. Softball Premier Resorts Triple Crown Fast-prtch World Series Ages 10A& 10B July 9 - 1 4 TBA Ages12A& 12 B July 9 - 1 4 TBA Ages14UA&14UB July 1 6 - 2 1 TBA Ages 16UA& 16US July 23 - 28 TBA Ages18UA&18UB July 23 TBA Recreation Sports Park City Recreation Services Racquet Club (615-5401) Adult Coed Softball Monday 6 - 1 0 p.m. Adult Men's Softball Tuesday 6 - 1 0 p,m. The tournament will continue throughout the month of July. City Idol. "I have no idea what Guitar Hero is," Walters chuckles. "I need to go to Best Buy and figure it out." Games will only be played between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow teams time to explore Park City and all of its offerings. Triple Crown has also added all-star games at the end of every week, so attendees and Parkites can come and see the best softball talent of the week. The 18s (age 18) division will be coached by junior college and four-year college coaches. As always, Triple Crown will tape the 16s and 18s championship games and syndicate it for cable rebroadcast. There will be the usual skills contest at the start of each week for the girls to go headto-head with their individual talents. This time around the stakes will be higher, with the top three home-run hitters battling it out for the crown during the all-star game. Besides the marketing changes the schedule has also changed and expanded. The first week, July 9-14, will welcome the A and B division of girls 10s (age 10) and 12s, July 16-21 will feature the 14s A and B divisions. The tournament will wrap up July 23-28 with 16s A and B and 18s A and B. The latter will be full of college prospects who will likely play for top programs next year. Walters is already seeing the fruits of his marketing labor. This year, over 350 teams will play in the Park City and Salt Lake areas. That's a 25-percent jump from last year that Walters would like to believe is due in large part to his efforts. "When you have been in this business long enough, you find it's more than an event," Walters said. "It's a vacation." He also hopes that the changes will make the three weeks more enticing to the Park City community. He says that some people will be amazed by the talent of the older girls, but a game featuring the younger girls can also be quite entertaining, because there is more scoring and excitement. "If you like girl's fast-pitch, it doesn't matter," Walters said. Games will take place in Park City, Coalville, Oakley, Heber and Salt Lake. Walters hope to see the Park City tourney eventually grow to include 600 teams. He thinks that if he keeps up his marketing efforts, that could be accomplished in three to four years. With completion of the new Quinn's Sports Complex at Quinn's Junction, he thinks the event will only continue to flourish.
