That's the advice of Recycle Utah which sells "karma stones" from plastic waste every year. Karma stones are multi-colored plastic pavers made from No. 2-7 colored plastic collected at the community recycling center on Woodbine Way •'When you recycle your colored bottles and containers in the mixed plastic bin at Recycle Utah, we send your plastic waste to a manufacturer in Salt Lake City," Insa Riepcn said. "They create our karma stones which we sell here at the center." "Karma stones have been a very popular item," Riepen said. "People use them in their gardens to create paths, deflect rain water, and make patios." Plastic has a shelf-life of about one thousand years. It comprises about 10 percent of the waste stream in the United States, Gardening waste from hoses, pots and other containers contributes about 350 million pounds of plastic yearly. Rccyclers shred and rcmanufacture it into a building material for walkways and highway signs. One manufacturer, Trex, makes "lumber" from plastic bags and is well-known. "Post-consumer plastic is messy, junky plastic," said Riepen. "There are fewer after-market recyclers for it because of the logistics involved in cleaning the residue from a canola oil bottle or a peanut butter jar. For that reason Recycle Utah receives only onethird the revenue for this type of plastic than for No. 1 plastic such as clean water bottles." The difficulty of finding a viable after-market recycler makes it all the more urgent to develop a popular product that people will incorporate into their lifestyle. "Recycle Utah's karma stones have kept tons of waste out of the Summit County Landfill," said Riepen. Karma stones arc available in charcoal, gray, brown, and terracotta. Knobs molded into the bottom of the stones makes them non-skid on any surface; a slight PHOTO COURTESY OF INSA RIEPEN' i From useless to useful, recycle Utah turns No. 2-7 recycled I plastic into pavers called Karma Stones that Parkites are : using in their landscaping. raising on top sheds rain water.
