Credit and your life One of the most important issues of our lives that can affect us for good or bad is credit. Most of us learned in our native lands thai it's good to pay in full and if possible, you save your money and when you have enough for the desired item, you buy with cash. Because of this, many of us went without many things because it was very hard or nearly impossible to save for the things we wanted. What is credit? Credit allows you to buy now and pay later. We agree with the store or owner of the business lo make payments until the item is paid off. For example, you need a new car that is $13,000. You use your credit to buy the car now, with only a down payment, and you sign an agreement to repay "the debt" over a number of years or months. Why do you need credit? Credit is an important component in our everyday life. We use credit to rent a car, reserve airline tickets, hotel rooms, rent a home or buy one, purchase furniture, cars. etc. Businesses will review your credit history and evaluate your request for loans, insurance, employment and even leases. What is your credit history? This is a record of all your credit obligations that you've had over a period of time - how much you borrowed, when you made the payments, if you were late or skipped payments. All this information is kept by credit bureaus that lenders use to evaluate your application for credit. According lo your credit history you get a score (points) that is like a grade for keeping your part of the bargain and being diligent and responsible, Do you have to pay for credit? Yes, credit has a cost and is called interest. Credit card companies, banks and any lender in general will give you credit with the condition of charging an interest rate on the "credit amount1' that you get." For example, if you borrow $5,000 to buy a car and your agreement says that you will have an interest rate of 10 percent, you'll pay back $5,500 at I he end of the year. One lip never sign a loan agreement without a clear understanding of your interest rate. I have known many who have signed a paper thai reads "Between nine and 21 percent." That's a very big vange of numbers and it will make a great difference if you have a nine. 13. or 20 percent interest rate. Be alert and firm. How do you establish good credit? i) Open a bank account and use it responsibly. 2) If you have utilities like gas. electricity, phono, pay them on lime and in full. 3) Apply for credit cards. Usually you can get your first one in the same bank that you have your bank account. You may need to gel a "'secure card." This is the first step for those without credit or very little credit. A secure card means you need lo deposit in your account the same amount as. your credit limit. Also, you may apply for gasoline cards or retail store cards. You can use them each month and pay the total every month. This way you are not paying interest but you are establishing a credit history. 4) Make your payments on time and pay at least the minimum amount due. If you can pay more, do it! It will decrease your debt and save you interest. 5) Review your credit report carefully, at least annually, to make sure it reflects your credit history and nol someone else's, ft) If your debt gets out of control, find sonic financial counseling or advice. There is so much more, but you can go and learn more next Thursday, April 21, 6:30 p.m. at the Park City Library, room 205. There will be a forum about "Gelling Your Own Home and Making Your Money Grow." Some of the topics will include where to keep your money, good credit, wiring money, real estate contracts, etc. Admission is free and translators will be available.
