Show The Park Record B-10 Wed/Thurs/Fri, February 9-11, 2005 Ifoung Olympic hopefuls get $82,000 All eyes were focused on the world-class athletes at Deer Valley Resort for the Chevrolet Freestyle World Cup at the end of January, but it was Park City's youth who took center stage when resorl president Bob Wheaton presented a check tonight to local youth winter sport program directors for $82,000. The grant represents a portion of the proceeds from Jans Winter Welcome, an annual gala hosted by the Youth WinterSports Alliance to benefit young athletes in 10 local winter sport programs. A first round of rants from the event, totaling 30,000. was distributed in December. "For 24 years, the generous •residents and businesses of Park f tfap to Old mm SUMMIT national teams. Freestyle athletes include mogulist Nate Roberts, from the Park City Freestyle Team. World Cup aerialist Jaret "Speedy" Peterson, of Kid's Inc., and US Ski Team member Rachel Pack, of the FLY UOP aerials program -- the youngest athlete, at 12, ever to be named to the national team. U.S. Alpine Team members Bryon Friedman, Ted Ligety, Justin Johnson, Adam Cole and Steve Nyman all came from the Park City Ski Team. 1A addition, the Park City Ski Team has repeatedly been named as "the best junior alpine program in the country" by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association and boasts national and international achievements by current and graduate athletes. Another Alliance grantee, the National Sports Foundation just won approval from the International Ski Federation to host an international continental cup for women ski jumpers June 8-9. The event is expected to play a pivotal role in the decision by the International Olympic Committee to admit women ski jumpers into the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Ski jumping is the last sport in the winter Olympics without gender equity. Taking their place on the podium last year in every international competition they entered, the NSF women are poised to raise the U.S. Olympic medal tally should the IOC rule in their favor. TUNA puts on largest junior ski race in U.S. SUBMITTED BY Richard Builough The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) and Soldier Hollow greeted nearly 500 skiers, their coaches, and many parents at the Junior Olympic Super Qualifier Races Jan. 22-23. making these the largest junior cross-country ski races in the United States. The start lists alone were 12 pages long. The incredible facilities crew, volunteer crew and Summit Systems Timers made these events flow with seamless professionalism. Young athletes, aged six through 19 from four ski divisions, traveled for the competition, atmosphere, camaraderie and, for some, the opportunity to qualify for the Junior Olympics to be held in March by the Auburn Ski Club in California. The divisions represented were: Intermountain (Utah, Idaho, WENTWORTH AT City have come forward in support of our local children," said Shelley Gillwald. executive director of the Youth WinterSports Alliance. "Jans Winter Welcome is a phenomenal community event, with proceeds this year totaling over $127,000. The Board of the Alliance is extremely grateful to our community for their continued contributions in support of our mission." The 10 programs of the Youth WinterSports Alliance offer a broad array of outdoor sports activities, including skiing, jumping, riding and sliding. These Alliance programs typically involve "learn-lo" levels of instruction, but also provide advanced training as many of their young stars have risen to C O U N T Y 'Provides Stimulation & activity for your loved ones continued independence* Oakley, Utah Toll Free: 800-464-9917 4200 North 400 West • Oakley, Ut 84055 Montana, and Wyoming), Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), Rocky Mountain (Colorado) and Far West (California, Nevada, and Arizona). Saturday dawned cold and clear, making glide waxing for the skate technique sprints relatively simple. However, with so many churning skis and skiers, tracks deteriorated as the day warmed. Soon the challenge for the racers was to pick a fast line around the corners, especially on the "horseshoe hill" climb. This was complicated by the fact that the shortest inside line was "boottop-deep" slush while the firmer outside line was not the shortest distance to the finish. Within the Intermountain Division, Utah skiers.with topthree division finishes included: Rosie Brennan (2nd Girls 16-19), Elizabeth Guiney and Annie Pokorny (1st and 3rd Girls 12- 13), Duncan EHinwood (1st Boys 12-13), Andrea Dunkle and Lisa Palomaki (2nd and 3rd Girls 1011), Sten Stray-Gundersen (1st Boys 10-11), Katie Susong and Mia Anderson (2nd and 3rd Girls 8-9), Garrett Builough, Karsten Hokanson and Ian Lowell (1st, 2nd and 3rd Boys 8-9), Hannah Bruns (1st Girls 1-7), and Noah Putt, Nathan Gibbs and Graydon Anderson (1st, 2nd and 3rd Boys 1-7)/ For Sunday's classic technique races a clear, cold morning and transformed snow would seem to make for simple kick waxing. Many skiers, nevertheless, had slippery skis on the difficult Soldier Hollow hills, making for a very long day for some racers. Within the Intermountain Division, Utah skiers with lopthree division finishes included: Rosie Brennan (2nd Girls 16-19), Elizabeth Guiney (1st Girls 1213). Tanner Putt (3rd Boys 12- 13), Lisa and Kya Palomaki (2nd and 3rd Girls 10-11). Sten StrayGundersen and Christopher Putt (1st and 3rd Boys 10-11). Katie Susong and Mia Anderson (2nd and 3rd Girls 8-9). Garrell Builough, Isaac Rogers and Kyle Beling (Isi. 2nd and 3rd Boys 89). Dorothy Navarro (1st Curls 17). and Noah Putt and Graydon Anderson (island 2nd Boys 1-7). Regardless of individual placing, these were talented athletes of all ages out to test themselves against some of the best racers, and some of the most challenging courses, in the nation. On Sunday, more than once skiers helped each other, yielding a Umc to a faster skier, encouraging teammates and competitors from other teams. The great news is that it looks like these races will be coming to Soldier Hollow for a long time - TUNA will, for the foreseeable future, be the event organizer.
