To the Hot Pots By Bea Mayes, researcher Park City Museum 'Hirough the years, Midway's hoi pols have always been a favorite destination for Parkiles. As early as 1SS2, The Park Record's Midway correspondent advertised the benefits of the warm springs: "For ages past, these springs have thrown up a lime sediment which has formed a crust around the edges, gradually widening out and rising higher and higher, until now each spring presents the appearance of a small mound of grayish limestone from 40 or 50 feel in height, with a crater-like top from which the water boils up and overflows. Some of these springs are warm and make admirable bathing places, while others are too hot to bear a hand in." Several years later. The Park Record reported, "some 1> or 20 bloods of the Park" had taken a horseback ride over lo the Hot Pots in.Midway, some 12 miles away. (The result of the 24-mile roundtrip was many sore muscles.) By March 1891. S. J. Sehneitter had put up a "fine and spacious two-story brick structure" near the big hot poi. Schneilter's Midway Hot Pol Resort, including a mineral plunge bath and "all the comforts and conveniences of a firsl-class family hotel," opened June 25, 1891. That same season, James H. Crockwcll photographed visitors at a Midway hot pot. In the background, center right, is Schneillcr's two-slory brick hotel and, on (he left, is the mound now known as The Homestead Crater. The ncxl year. Sehneitter advertised his improved Midway Hot Pot Resort with its new bathhouse, comfortable dressing rooms, a fine, large dancing pavilion, new swings and croquet grounds. Parkiles could catch a daily slage lo the hoi pots. Schneitter's brick building, now named Virginia House, is Hie spa at a muchcxpanded Homestead Resort For photos and information about early days at the resort, visit The Homestead Resorl. 700 North Homestead Dr..
