Chevron public ; affairs officer Hugh Dickey said the pipe was found to be corroded and split. ' "We don't know how long the pipe had been leak- '. ing, but we understand there were some reports of peo- ; pie smelling the oil as early as last Wednesday," Dickey said Friday. I The company closed 500 South west of 1 100 West, and a 10-man crew has been working in the area 12 ; hours a day since the spill was detected. The fuel spill- ed into the A-l Drain and surrounding soil. The com- ' pany will continue its cleanup efforts "for at least one, ', possibly two more weeks," Dickey said. Chevron has replaced 80 feet of pipe and has been required to dig under 500 South and replace a large water culvert in its cleanup efforts. The job will also require re-quire hauling away and testing for hazardous products, 7,000 feet of soil. The problem was discovered last Friday by a road crew and reported to the Davis County Health Department Depart-ment which conducted an investigation this week. County environmental health official Mark Williams said the department's initial investigation of the spill indicated that the fuel "had not just been dumped there so we called Chevron who has a pipe running through there," Williams said. Chevron officials responded immediately and began cleanup efforts. The Utah State Health Department has investigated the spill and has not yet determined if a fine will be assessed. "We are sorry that this has occurred," Dickey said. He said the company has not yet determined the dollar loss of the spill.
