Show Wildcats continue to improve region record ' Braves, Vikinas, Darts' troubles continue aaainst leaaue softball opponents By ALAN HAACKE t Clipper Correspondent I BOUNTIFUL When cross- ! town rivals play, scores are bound to be close and teams are bound to play tough; Tuesday's match-up be- ' tween the Bountiful Braves and I Woods Cross Wildcats' softball ! teams proved to be no exception. ; Other local games this week i found Viewmont falling to Layton, ! and Davis dropping duels to Roy and Bear River. ; WOODS CROSS 9, BOUN- ! TIFUL 7When the dust settled, the Wildcats came away with a scant two-point lead and win over Boun-tiful's Boun-tiful's Lady Braves Tuesday. "We were disappointed they beat us, but then Woods Cross is a good team," Bountiful coach Brad Chris-tensen Chris-tensen said of the Braves' near win. "It was a team effort. I wouldn't want to single out any player...They all did well," he added. Still, the Bountiful coach had to be pleased with his team's starting performance. The Braves came out swinging; at the end of the first inning, inn-ing, they led the 'Cats 7-1. The Wildcat coach Kevin Wilson grilled his team with a "talkin' to," and the 'Cats returned the charge. "He (Wilson) told us we were better than what we were playing, and that we had to go out and do as well as we knew we could," Lady 'Cat Lori Kirkwood said. Kirkwood went on to pound in an RBI of her own. And with the hits of teammates Charity Richards and Jeness Jones, the 'Cats came back to within striking range. "We made some real errors early. ear-ly. But we went on and made the plays we were supposed to and brought ourselves back up," Richards explained. With the score tied going into the bottom of the last inning, the Wildcats brought in one of their ol' reliables. "Denise Boam came in and hit two RBIs to break the tie and give us the win," Kirkwood said. LAYTON 28, VIEWMONT 4 At Layton, both Viewmont and Layton chalked up several runs Tuesday, but the Lancers took control con-trol and handed the Vikings a 28-4 loss. 'It (the loss) always comes in one extremely bad inning," Viking coach Paige Adams said. "Our girls start one bad inning, and they don't bounce back until the next inning." Lady Viking Camilla Lawler was the first of her team to score, followed by teammates Stacie Henderson, Andrea Madsen, Char Holmes, Rhyan Hayes and Lori Koford. But the Lancers went on to take a 21-point lead to outdistance Viewmont. The Lancers unproved to 4-4 in region action, 5-5 overall. Viewmont, on the other hand, remained at 1 -6 in region one action and 1-12 overall. BEAR RIVER 14, DAVIS 7 At Kaysville, the Lady Darts' softball woes continued Wednesday as Davis fell to the Bear River Bears 14-7 in a preseason make-up match. The Darts led Bear River for most of the contest, grasping a slight 6-5 lead at the end of the fourth four-th inning-thanks to some tough play at the mound by Dart pitcher Angela Orme. But even Heather Mills' last inning inn-ing RBI couldn't preserve the Davis lead as the Bears rallied to win. On Tuesday, the Darts took a pounding from Roy in a 12-0 shutout. "Roy's a pretty solid team. They don't have any soft spots in their defense that we could attack," Davis coach Chimane Creer said. "We hit a lot, but we kept leaving leav-ing our girls stranded on bases. We just couldn't hit them in," Creer added. The Darts remain winless on the season. Thursday and Friday's games were postponed due to weather. Thursday scheduled a DavisViewmont match-up which has been rescheduled for May 8. Bountiful and Woods Cross will reschedule bouts with West and Jordan, respectively, for either Monday or Wednesday of next week. |
