Show j,!!!!!!!!!! Honor roops Editor: We believe that we should recognize rec-ognize and honor our troops for risking their lives to defend other people in the Persian Gulf. We also think that we should have a parade and have all of the soldiers in it that fought in the Middle East march in it so we can applaud them and recognize them for what they did. We also think that they should have a celebration at the Capitol for them. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Alya Hopkins, sixth grade Jami Lynn Gadd, sixth grade April Ann Rowe, sixth grade Washington Elementary seniors are, how hungry for truth and knowledge and a sense of justice. And I cringe to think any teacher would willfully dump a bucket of ashes in the comer of such a mind under a ruse of freedom. So what if good wins over evil in the book. To get there, the whole class is forced to stumble through the garbage dump, if the teacher is foolish enough to choose the obscene ob-scene passages for class discussion. With all the good that comes out of that age level, I find it hard to believe that only a few seniors were offended by that book. It must be that their courage, generally, to speak out against social degradation hasn't quite caught up. If I were a senior now, I would have considered it an insult to my intelligence, especially when one considers the myriad of really good books that are available. Elaine Walton Fanmington what you were hiding when you took such a pure statement and blew it out of all proportion. I know I personally was offended by Mayor LinneU's letter to the editor when he used his position as a former mission president for the LDS Church to defend his integrity. I was one of the fortunate missionaries mis-sionaries who had the privilege of spending about half my mission under one president and half of it under a new one. I learned then that there was so much difference between be-tween the two men, that for one to claim they are above reproach because they were a mission president presi-dent means nothing to me. Every missionary has probably had some exposure, if not been a companion, to a very poor missionary. mis-sionary. So, anytime anyone claims to be so good because they are a returned re-turned missionary, I say. ..prove it! Through all this to-do-about-nothing, I have heard so many questionable ques-tionable stories about Bountiful City's present governing body. I think you all owe Renee an apology. 'He who is without sin cast the first stone The Clipper plainly stated that Mayor Linnell went to Washington to see if they should enter into a lawsuit. Yet before a packed house he stood and said he was in Washington Wash-ington and didn't know what was going on in Bountiful. To write a letter of rejection to be read to the public before you even heard Renee's statement was unethical. What it boils down to is what was corruption when I was maturing now has a much milder definition of just being questionable or unethical. It was Shafter and Linnell who first felt guilty and then dragged Foy, Holt and Gramoll in with them. It wasn't Renee who reacted because she didn't get her own way. It was the rest of you who made a "heyday" out of it with your reactions. reac-tions. If you can't act like adults, resign and we will get someone who can. Pearl Wendel Bountiful Soldier's story Editor: There are many things that irritate ir-ritate us in our busy world. These things very often get their fair share of expression. What doesn 't sometimes come before our friends and neighbors and the public pub-lic in general are the many good and kind acts and words and feelings. I wish to relate to my community one such: As a Utah National Guardsman, I was one of many recently called up into an ' activated" status to support sup-port deployment of forces directly in the Persian Gulf and other places due to the Desert Storm Operation. I was given three days' notice to get all my affairs in order and to plan on staying one year. Two of those three days were a Saturday and Sunday. Many things are unavailable to be transacted on those days and so I was at the mercy of those businesses who would work quickly and cooperatively with me. There was a great need for me to obtain a quick loan and I approached approach-ed one of our Bountiful-located companies for same. Within a few hours I had in my hand what I needed, need-ed, with a smile. As I arrived at my full-time duty base 1,500 miles away, I was informed in-formed of a provision for service personnel of interest rate allowances with existing loans. I wrote my new loan-carrying company, com-pany, and they immediately reduced my interest rate which conformed to the provisions. There was no hassle. I would like all to know that there are people and companies who are fair and who really do support our efforts for world peace, not just in word, but in actual deed. Where bucks count in the business world, some businesses will pass them up temporarily for the best good of the community and country's interest. This new loan company (Northwest (Nor-thwest Financial, 273 W. 500 S., Bountiful) of mine has my business for a long time. Name withheld by request Listen to Renee Editor: I, along with many other Bountiful Boun-tiful citizens, attended the Bountiful City Council meeting on Wednesday Wednes-day evening, March 13. At one point, as Mayor Linnell was trying to defend himself, I thought I was in one of the Davis County Commission meetings of a year or two ago. I had read the original statement of Councilwoman Renee Coon, that she had seen corruption in the pipeline decision from the federal to the local level. I assume in reading it that she meant the local Forest Service, with whom I'm sure she had many contacts in trying to keep the pipeline from going through Bountiful. I was shocked to read in the next issue of the Clipper that Councilman Coun-cilman Shafter had taken her statements as a personal attack on Bountiful City's government. According Ac-cording to the paper, Shafter called it to the attention of Mayor Linnell. Mayor Linnell then wrote Renee a letter demanding proof of her corruption cor-ruption she had seen in Bountiful City's government and asked the other four members of the council to sign it. Only when one has a guilty conscience cons-cience do they react the way Shafter and Linnell did. If anyone owed anyone an apology it was the mayor and the other four council people who owed an apology to Renee. It was they who blew it all out of proportion. pro-portion. It was the mayor who wrote the lengthy letter in the Tuesday's Clipper, March 12. In his letter to the editor, he indicated in-dicated that Renee was asking him to resign as mayor. I have a copy of the statement, and she merely asked that he refrain from working with the pipeline people. I was shocked by the statements of the rest of the council people angrily an-grily accusing Renee of calling them corrupt. I was especially shocked at Barbara Holt and Bob Gramoll's statements. Renee supported sup-ported you when you tried to do away with RDA. If you people would have taken more time to listen or read what Renee was trying to say, you would have known she was speaking of the local Forest Service when she stated local government If you look up our local Forest Service in the phone book, you'll find them listed under the United States Government. Govern-ment. So, she was not wrong in referring re-ferring to them as local government. govern-ment. It was the mayor and you four council people who made a mountain moun-tain out of a molehill. I think more people became more suspicious of Let's recycle Editor: Americans produce 154 million tons of garbage every year, 50 percent per-cent of this garbage is recyclable. Two point five million plastic bottles are thrown away every hour here in the United States, with only a fraction of them being recycled. An entire forest of over 500,000 trees is wiped out just to supply Americans with their Sunday newspaper. If everyone in the United States recycled ten percent of their newspapers, we would save approximately 25 million trees every year. We as citizens need to be aware of the need to recycle. There are many recycling facilities in the community, let' s become more aware of them and help save the planet. Mitchel Mckinlay Crux of matter Editor: Here is yet another aspect to the Grendel controversy, but I feel it is the crux of the matter. There is a world of difference between be-tween a book with obscene passages being available at a bookstore or library, and having it promoted in the classroom by role models.
