Show Hill lays off 900 workers HELL AIR FORCE BASE Up to 900 civilian employees at Hill Air Force Base got an unwelcome Christmas message from the military this week you're going to be fired. Affected employees will receive official notification 60 days prior to the effective date of planned reduction in force (RIF), Len Barry, base director of media relations, said. The RTF notices are expected to be delivered in early March. The layoffs will affect between 800 and 900 of the base's estimated 6,000 industrially-funded civilian workers, Barry said. Industrially-funded employees include those working in aircraft and missile depot maintenance positions. "We will be trying to find other jobs for some of these folks, if we can," Barry said. "But we have a huge hiring freeze on, generally.' The job reductions were part of 4,950 RTFs overall ordered by the Air Force Logistics Command for its five main bases in California, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. The new figure is considerably scaled down from 7,250 RTFs originally planned by the command on Nov. 15, he said. |
