Show Ports shut out Toylorsville while Broves lose ot home Lemon leads Vikes to 3rd straight win By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor Viewmont 6 Clearfield 3 BOUNTIFUL The Clearfield Clear-field Falcons became number three in a growing list of consecutive victims vic-tims notched by the Viewmont hockey team, a trend which has coach Dale Williams feeling confident. confi-dent. The Vikes beat the Falcons 6-3 on Dec. 7 behind the inspirational play of Lester Lemon. Lemon scored 3 against Clearfield and has led Viking scoring since he returned to play three games ago. It's no coincidence that Viewmont's winning streak began with Lemon's return said Williams. 'Lemon has really made the difference dif-ference on this team. The turn around since he came back has been incredible. "He's a playmaker. He can make things happen. ' ' II " i' I I I W I With two assists, Lemon had a hand in five of the Vikes' goals. Viewmont goalie Lance Oscar-son Oscar-son also played a key role in the Vikings' victory. Oscarson was credited with 28 saves to Clearfield's Clear-field's 19. "I was really impressed with Clearfield's coach and how well his program's organized," said Williams. "For a first-year team, they are good. The Falcons didn't come out hitting hard, so I told my kids to turn it down a notch to avoid drawing draw-ing a lot of penalties. As soon as I did that, they started coming back.' In spite of Williams efforts, the game saw over 30 minutes in penalties. Viewmont's next outing is scheduled for Dec. 19 against Bountiful. "If we continue play like we have and don't draw a lot of penalties, we'll be fine, Williams said. Davis clobbered the Warriors in a high school hockey match-up in front of an abusive and pro-Taylors pro-Taylors v ill e crowd that incited the post-game fisticuffs. As the Darts were leaving the ice, a Taylorsville skater hurled himself at the excited Davis team, causing a free-for-all that cost both teams suspensions. Dart skater Ryan Larkin will sit out for at least the next three games. Larkin was slapped with fighting, game misconduct and high sticking penalties, and teammate Dave Wright was hit with a one-game suspension on a 3rd -man -in penalty. pen-alty. "Larkin is an essential part of our team, assistant Davis coach Craig Walker said. "We were just beginning to play as a team. We'll just have to play through the suspension as best we can. "We knew something was going to happen. Both teams were doing a lot of cheap-shotting, and the referees ref-erees weren't calling too much.' Taylorsville 's King, who started the fight, was benched for at least the next four games on instigating a fight and game misconduct penalties. The brawl overshadowed the fact that the Darts logged their first shutout this season thanks to an impressive im-pressive defensive effort spearheaded spear-headed by Davis goalie Matt Jamieson. Jamieson was credited with 27 saves. "Matt has been waiting for that shutout for a long time," Walker explained. ' 'He's deserved it in every game we've played.' Davis' other four points came at the hands of Paul Anderson, Doug Wright, Tiai Udy and Ryan Larkin. "I believe we played well. I just wished tempers could have been kept under control. I was proud of our team right up until the end of the game. The fight was not necessary. In the locker room, I told the team it wasn't worth it; they've got to decide if they want to play hockey or fight." Davis will return to action against Murray in mid-January. Salt Lake Independent 9 Bountiful 0 BOUNTIFUL Not only did Northern Utah get pelted by an overwhelming storm Thursday night, so did the Bountiful High School Hockey team 9-0 as they faced off against an overpowering Salt Lake Independent team. The independent team is comprised com-prised of talented high-school aged skaters not affiliated with a particular par-ticular high school. "We had an outstanding performance perfor-mance from Steve Davis who played aggressively," Braves coach Mike Holmes said. "But for the most part, we were really flat. "I think it had to do with a lot of things, the weather, Christmas season, little fan support Thursday with the storm and all and facing a very tough team, but when you get right down to it, we just weren't aggressive," ag-gressive," Holmes explained. "We're looking forward to playing play-ing Viewmont next week. It will be tough because our goalie won't be there. If we can control Lester Lemon and not let him shoot, it should be a pretty even game," added Holmes. |
