Show Powerful foes plague south Davis grapplers Woods Cross is the only teom to log a dual motch win; Darts, Vikes and Braves beaten By G. BRETT HART Sports Editor Tooele 56 Bountiful 12 TOOELE Bountiful High wrestling coach Jerr) Staley says he's more pleased with his team's 56-1 losing effort against Tooele on Thursday than with th Braves' previous win over Granite the week before. Bountiful squared off against Region Six's toughes team in its second, region dual meet match-up. - 135 and 160, respectively. Henderson is also a 152 pounder but lost to Jones in a challenge match and moved to 1 60. Bryan Smith earned Bountiful' s other points tying . with his opponent 4-4. , Staley added that his team's positive showing against the Region Six powerhouse was encouraging. "I think we're competitive with Woods Cross and some of the other teams in the region," Staley said. "We're not a contender right now for the region championship, cham-pionship, but I think we'll have three or four region " champs from our team. Hillcrest 58 Davis 9 e MIDVALE Due to a Utah High School Activities Ac-tivities Association rule which restricts wrestlers to a maximum of 24 matches per season, the Darts benched back from an injury. I'm glad to have him back," Thompson said. And judging by the results of his match, Pratt was glad to be back, too. The 171 -pound Viewmont wrestler punished West Jordan's Burgess 17-6. "There were three other key matches we should have won. If they would have gone the other way, it would have made the difference for us." Jordan 43 Woods Cross 24 JORDAN The Woods Cross High wrestling squad's second region confrontation Thursday brought the 'Cats' region record to 1-1 with a 43-24 loss to the Jordan High Beetdiggers in team scoring. "We were pinned six times," Woods Cross coach Glen Orme said. "Three of them should never have happened. We were ahead in the matches. Orme added that the loss was due in part to the absence of two key Wildcat grapplers, Jed Feller and Greg Gehring. The two wrestlers anchor Woods Cross' 145- and 152-pound slots. "If Feller and Gehring were there we would have had 15 more points, and that would have made the difference," dif-ference," Orme added. "Our sophomore wrestlers are really coming on. Jason Cleverly, Chad Wray and Carter Mickey are all learning. It just takes time for these kids to get experience. experi-ence. Each of them is making progress," said Orme. Mickey led Melville 5-0 and was about to pin him when Melville rolled him to his back and stuck him at gram. The kids are used to winning. They're working hard without much success; it's a little discouraging. We try to get over it by making every match a building process and trying to learn from it. The Darts' three wins Tuesday were registered by Jason Sanders, Travis Adams and David Blair. Sanders defeated Buhler by a technical fall in the second se-cond in a 135-pound match-up. 145-pound Travis Adams overcame Kitchen 6-2, and David Blair claimed Davis' only pin against Ksowronek in the second round of his 171-pound bout. W. Jordan 38 Viewmont 19 r JORDAN "We made them look good," Viking coach Bart Thompson said after his team's losing clash with W. Jordan Jaguars Tuesday night. The Vikes took their lumps on the road, losing 38-19 in team competition. "We didn't wrestle well; we weren't aggressive, and they were," Thompson continued. "They beat up on us. I hope we don't have any more nights like that one." Grapplers Randy Yellow, Steve Bender, Alan Pratt and Lee Mahlstede were the only Vikings to enjoy victories vic-tories against the tough Jaguar team. Thompson said Bender and Mahlstede have been two od Viewmont's toughest wrestlers this year. Mahlstede has only tasted defeat once this season. ' ' Bender has been one of the bright spots for us; he's been tough all year," added Thompson. Bender defeated Johnson 14-9, and Mahlstede pinned Cuden in the first round of his match, "Pratt is one of our key wrestlers who has just come Prep Wrestling "I thought we wrestled better," Staley said "W have a lot of young kids. They stayed with it longer We're improving." Staley said he thought 103-pound sophomon Cannon Neslen and 119-pound senior Mark Smitl wrestled well in spite of their losses. "This was Neslen s first varsity match, and he di well," said Staley. "He was down 8-0, but fought to get off his back th entire match. He Was determined not to get pinned. H didn't get pinned until the last seconds of the thin round. "Smith did well with his takedowns. He wa: even ahead at one point in the match." Winning for Bountiful, Scott Olson defeated his op ponent 6-1 in a 130-pound match-up, 152-pound Marshall Mar-shall Jones won 4-0 and Jason Henderson won 12-2 ir the 1 60-pound match. The result was disaster as Hillcrest pounded Davis 58-9 in team competition. Dart coach Alan Porter said the decision was the unfortunate un-fortunate result of a scheduling mixup that would have pushed his varsity grapplers past the 24-match mark. Matt Harker, 119, Jason Robinson, 130, Kohn Cullimore, 1 60 and Josh Lowry, 1 89, all watched from the bench as each of their young replacements fell to Hillcrest opponents or their team forfeited in their absence. "If they would have been able to compete, it would have been an entirely different match," Porter said. "Our biggest challenge right now is keeping the morale up. Woods Cross 40 Judge 25 WOODS CROSS The Wildcat wrestlers opened region competition at home Tuesday night with a much-needed 40-25 win against the Judge Memorial Bulldogs. "It was good to win that one," said Wildcat coach Glen Orme. "We're wrestling better." Woods Cross claimed wins in the 112, 130, 140, 145, 152, 171, 189 and heavy weight classes. "We wrestled pretty good overall," Orme added. "We did lose a couple of matches we should have won, but that's how it goes." WRESTLE CONT'D FROM B-2 at the end of the first round. "That typified our night, said Orme. ' I was ticked off by the fact that we had a guy from Tooele referee-ing referee-ing a region match when Tooele is in our region. But what can you do about it when the Utah High School Activities Association won't listen to you? You can bet that would never happen in basketball," Orme added. On the brighter side, Woods |
