Show Spartans surprise 'Cats 74-62 By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor 1 WOODS CROSS The Murray High Spartans controlled the backboards and capitalized on free throws Friday night enroute to i a 74-62 upset of Woods Cross. A second half Spartan scoring spree, backed up with muscle in the rebounding department totally dominated the cold-shooting Wildcats, leaving partisans in the home gymnasium asking them- of fluidity but was stagnant throughout most of the second half. Not only did the 'Cats struggle from the field, their offensive rebounding was almost nonexistent. Leading Woods Cross' board effort was Brian Tayler with a meager 5 rebounds followed by Ryan Creer with 2. Offensively, the 'Cats did have three men in double figures. Jon Wickizer led the Wildcats with 16. Mike Gurr chipped in 15, and Matt King added 1 1 . "This loss will be good for our kids. They think they're too good. They'll be all right after this," Wilson added. The game marked the opening of Region Six action for both squads. The 'Cats will try to regroup and prepare for Jordan High, now 1-0 in region after defeating Bountiful last night. The Beetdiggers will travel to Woods Cross on Tuesday; on Thursday, the 'Cats will host the Tooele Buffaloes. selves, "Who were these guys?" Woods Cross captured the game's first two points, but the rest of the basketball contest belonged to Murray. The Spartans out-shot, out-rebounded out-rebounded and out-hustled the 'Cats to earn the upset victory over the favored Woods Cross team. Murray led by 6 at the half, 32-38 and exploded during the third by as many as 18. During fourth quarter play, the Wildcats managed to cut the lead to 9 with almost three minutes left, but that was as close as the faltering Woods Cross team would get. Simply, the 'Cats couldn't buy a bucket from the field or the free throw line during the fourth period missing six straight, fourth-quarter opportunities. The Spartans, on the other hand, were perfect from the line during the fourth shooting 7-7. "Murray played great," Wildcat coach Kevin Wilson said. "They won the game on free throws, they had to. We couldn't hit any. "I was surprised that they were able to out-rebound us. We're a lot bigger than they are. Before we play Jordan, we're going to have to find someone that can rebound." He was upset with the lack of team play in his offense, Wilson said. The offense that saw moments |
