Show Braves, Darts lose to SLC rivals Davis goalie Matt Jamieson logs 65 saves against Brighton By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor Bountiful vs. Cottonwood BOUNTIFUL The Braves watched a 1 -point, third-period lead slowly become a 2-point deficit as their lack of concentration on the ice gave Cottonwood the lead, and ultimately, the hockey game. The Colts came from behind to beat the Braves 5-3 in the Bountiful Recreation rink Wednesday night. "When we get ahead, we tend to lose concentration and pack it in," Prep Hockey said Bountiful coach Mike Holmes. "Once we gain the lead, we need to learn to stay aggressive. It's something that takes practice. The kids seem to have a mental attitude , this year and don't hang in there until un-til the end of the game." After an aggressive stand gave Bountiful the lead in the second period, the Braves began playing more defensively. The change in tempo shifted the advantage to the Colts favor and allowed Cottonwood Cotton-wood to score three goals in the last seven minutes of play. "They re trying so hard not to make little mistakes that they lose track of what's going on around them, and they're not helping each other out," said Holmes. "We're not a team yet. We play too much as individuals, but the teamwork will come eventually." Offensively for the Braves, Brandon Wallin scored Bountiful's initial goal with an assist from Adam Cook. Grant Golightly slapped in the Braves' second goal, while Cook gave Bountiful a temporary tem-porary lead scoring the Braves' third goal. Both Golightly and Cook's goals were unassisted. On defense, Bountiful goalie Shawn Tooley registered 32 saves. "I have to say that Wallin is one player I can count on," said Holmes. "He's not the highest scorer; he doesn't have the best puck control skills, but 99 percent of the time, I can count on him to get the job done. I was pleased with his performance against Cottonwood. Cotton-wood. "Steve Davis also did well. He tries harder than his skills allow him to play, but then again, all my kids are trying. None of them are lazy," added Holmes. The Braves' next match pits them against the Viewmont Vikings at the Bountiful Rec Center Dec. 19. And on defense, both held the line well." Davis will return to action against Taylorsville this Wednesday Wednes-day night at the Bountiful Rec Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m. Hockey when they squared up against Brighton, but they were determined to hold their heads high when the final buzzer sounded. Though the Bengals beat the Darts 8-1, Davis managed to frustrate the Salt Lake powerhouse, refusing to go down easily. "We kept the Bengals below 10 points," said Davis assistant coach Craig Walker. "We played as well as we have all season. It definitely was our best game. "We knew we would lose the game before it started, but I told the kids not to let them (Brighton) make a joke of it. If anyone was laughing after the game, it was the Darts who left the ice smiling because they knew they had done better than some of the teams in the Bengals' own division had. "We're in the division below Brighton,' explained Walker. "They've beaten teams in their own division worse than they beat us. They were getting frustrated because they couldn't have their way with us. "If we can play with that much confidence, we'll finish the rest of the season undefeated," 'said Walker. The key to Davis stand was goalie Matt Jamie son, who finished the game with an unbelievable 65 saves. Davis only managed to shoot on goal nine times for one goal. Davis scoring honors went to Ryan Larkin. Larkin scored the Darts only goal at the end of the first period to bring Davis to within a point of the Bengals. Brighton scored both of its first period goals during the opening 30 seconds of the game. The Bengals first two shots both resulted in scores. In spite of the early setback, Jamie son stood his ground. "That was the best game I've ever seen Matt play," said Walker. 'His 65 saves are phenomenal |
