Since that time, he has appeared ap-peared : frequently with - most of , America's major and regional symphonies. sym-phonies. This will be Brion's second se-cond appearance with the Utah Symphony. These "Sousa at the Symphony" concerts, are a fulfillment of Brion's long-standing ambition to take a fresh look at America's musical traditions. The Sousa re-creations are the result of Brion's extensive research in libraries, newspapers, museums, interviews with the former Sousa band members, and the study of old recordings. Brion has given special attention to a revival of Sousa's appealing and durable programming techniques.. Brion's portrayal includes Sousa's conducting mannerisms and stage appearance from the 1920's, replicas of . his baton, uniform and white gloves. His investigation in-vestigation of the Sousa Band's performance per-formance techniques has led to modern editions of Sousa's orchestral or-chestral and band music. -According to Brion, "Sousa at the Symphony" gives concert-goers concert-goers an opportunity to experience Sousa's exciting concert style. "Each piece," Brion said, "was followed by unannounced encores, and the timing was rapid-fire. As the applause started for the big piece, Sousa would bow, start counting coun-ting rapidly to ten, and at ten, he whirled, gave the downbeat, and the band began Encore Number One. The title was supplied by a drummer who rose and either held iny a placard for the, audience to see, or placed one on a stand. Those concerts really moved, they had pace, as well as color. And that added to all the excitement." For more information, call the box office at 533-6407. |
