Show Fetal Lnnaes JM5 ByTOMHARALDSEN py ' Clipper Sports Editor Questions to ponder as sports year ends And so we lower the curtain on another high school sports year, and this one's ending is particularly nostalgic because it marks the end of Region Four as we know it I'll miss having all four of our local schools in the same league, though 1 won't miss Highland and East much. This is the time of year when coaches and players look back and ask themselves questions, like ''What if..." It's also the time when sportswriters ask questions. Such as the ones I've listed here: "'What is an illegal defense, and why should anybody be penalized for playing defense? Why does the National Hockey League have teams from two countries, while the International Hockey League has teams from only one? Why are golf clubs called metal woods when they have no wood? When will the Utah High School Activities Association learn the true meaning of press relations? - Why "does everyone get so excited over Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan? Sure, they're great basketball players, but they're - also showoffs and rich spoiled brats. When will Utah soccer officials learn the offsides rule? Why do high school track coaches allow BYU to hold a meet? When will all high school officials, particularly those in basketball, basket-ball, realize that players today can really make some of those incredible in-credible moves without traveling or abating a violation? Could it be that the officials were never able to make those moves themselves," and are jealous? Who cares about boxing? When will those writers who send press releases to newspapers learn the King's English? I mean, I know the King's English, and so's the Queen for that matter. When will sportswriters from daily papers in Salt Lake and Ogden realize that south Davis County isn't the same driving distance from their offices as Nova Scotia? Will girls' soccer and volleyball peacefully co-exist next fall? ' - Will the Davis School Board spend less time worrying about D's on the mountain and more time worrying about D's in the classroom? . Of course, I don't anticipate learning the answer to many of these " questions. Still, it's been a great and very interesting school year. As - always, we at the Clipper wish all the graduates well, and look forward for-ward to the new sports year that begins, believe it or not, in 12 weeks! |
