Show 'Inconvenience' teens for behavorial changes Behavioral change does not occur by punishing the adolescent, arrange the environment so that it inconveniences them instead. " That according to Dr. Ken Harris, a psychologist over rehabilitation at Utah Valley Regional Hospital in Provo, who spoke at last Wednesday's Wednes-day's Educators' Forum at the hospital. hos-pital. Dr. Harris told stories and listed topics he believes are important in "Developing Responsibility in Adolescents." According to Dr. Harris, "A mature ma-ture person will do chores and will not dominate the phone." Dr. Harris Har-ris also said a mature person does not disobey rules, is an honest person, per-son, and uses appropriate language. ' One example Dr. Harris gave of creating an inconvenient environment envir-onment occurred when he was a school teacher in Wyoming and one ' , of his students was chewing tobacco tobac-co in his class. He gave the student two choices-swallow the tobacco or go to the principal's office. The student chose to swallow the tobac co and Dr. Harris-never had a problem prob-lem with tobacco chewers in his class again. ' , Dr. Harris used the messy rooms .' of his four daughters as another example. ex-ample. In resolving the matter he : offered to clean their rooms, they , responded "Sure Dad." He said iC took five minutes in each roomi stuffing everything into a garbage r bag. When the girls went to wear their clothes, they had lo be washed-and washed-and pressed. The next time they responded re-sponded ' 'no thanks Dad" and cleaned their rooms by themselves. The Educator's Forum Seminars are held every other Wednesday at the Benchmark Regional Hospital in Woods Cross.
