It looks like a banner year for the Runnin' Utes, and with a little help from their fans, the season will be a good one. The regular season opener is Friday against Loyola of Los Angeles. Many good seats stil remain. u 4-8 cc W o by GARY LESSER Chronicle Staff The University basketball team experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat Tuesday night, as the Runnin' Utes ran up 191 points in their season opener and wonlost, 97-94. Family affair It was the reds against the whites, sort of a family affair even at the time-outs when both teams huddled together. The white team was the one that racked up 97 points and the victory, but the outcome wasn't important. What counted in this game was the experience of playing in front of a Special Events Center crowd, playing under game conditions, and playing in real game uniform, all of which are only simulated at practice. Although the game was in reality little more than a well-attended intra-squad scrimmage, it showed Ute basketball fans that the word "freshman" is no longer used to connote an awkward, clumsy rebounder who is skinny and has arms dangling to his knees. Fit right in This year, Utah is supposed to have more frosh on its varsity team than any other major college team, and Tuesday night. Coach Bill Forster showed the fans his youngsters can fit right in there with the other guys. The frosh players were headed by Charles Menatti, a 6-7 lad from California who was the game's high scorer with 27 points. "Chas" was 11 of 17 from the field, and to prove that scoring is not his only bag, he led both squads with 12 rebounds. Menatti played a relatively errorless game while working for the losing red squad. Little brother Remember Weber State's Willie Sojourner? Well, his "little" brother Mike has come to Utah to play basketball, as evidenced by his strong performance of 16 points and 10 boards, highest on the white squad, along with Jim Sorenson, who also had 10. Two other freshmen for the red squad had fine games. Luther Mike Sojourner (white team) fights Doug Terry and J.C. transfer Craig Nielsen (35) for a rebound. For those who weren't at the game.
