Normal registration New Outreach chairman sees program expansion next year The three-year-old Outreach program will be expanded to reach more of the community and hopefully to reach a goal of $50,000 during the next year under the direction of William H. Whisner, the new chairman of the committee. Dr. Whisner replaces his colleague Lewis Max Rogers of the Department of Philosophy. Mr. Rogers has served as chairman on a voluntary basis since Outreach's beginning and, according to Dr. Whisner, did "a great job." Outreach was formed in 1969 by several faculty members, including Rogers and Whisner, as a volunteer group dedicated to raising money for students qualified to attend the University but unable to afford it. At the start Outreach's primary concern was soliciting donations from faculty and staff members, but student participation par-ticipation has of late been providing a larger and larger percentage of the money. Since its beginning Outreach has collected more than $50,000, approximately $5,000 of which is student money. Letters are sent every fall and spring to faculty and staff members asking for support. Only eight percent of the faculty have contributed money, but those who have responded to the letters have made large contributions. con-tributions. The money which Outreach raises is used to finance the education of any student demonstrating his financial need. Out-of-state students are aided mittee expanded to include a representative from each college. With greater publicity Dr. Whisner hopes to see a much larger percentage of faculty and staff members making contributions. con-tributions. The administration and development offices will then make campaigns this fall soliciting the support of Salt Lake's businessmen. Student participation is also expected to increase. Dr. Whisner would like to see a small donation from each student made through ASUU as a permanent source of funding for the program. A 50 cent contribution from each student, for example, would provide Outreach with $15,000 annually just about the total amount collected annually in past years. Due to federal cutbacks in by the program but priority is given to in-state students. Members of all ethnic minorities as well as disadvantaged whites are aided by Outreach. Expansion of the program is Dr. Whisner's major goal. He hopes to see the central corn- financial aid, Dr. Whisner believes that Outreach is more important than ever this year, and sets a goal of $50,000 to be raised from faculty members. Students funds and pledges made by businessmen will be counted separately from this goal. |
