Show Union prepares for a face lift Remodeling will begin this summer on the north wing of the Union Bldg. and should be completed by fall semester, according to Norm Albiston, ASUU vice president. The remodeled area will be shared by ASUU offices, the Chronicle, the Union Board and student services. The ASUU needs to consolidate all its offices and equipment in one area under lockand key. Mr Albiston said, "thousands of dollars worth of duplicators, typewriters, staplers, etc., have been stolen." The ASUU Assembly will move across the hall with the other ASUU offices, leaving room 247 vacant. Since this room is adjacent to their offices, the Chronicle is asking for this space to create extra office and work space. The Union Board will move down the hall, displacing the ping pong players. A staircase will be built near the ASUU offices leading down to the first floor. Here the Ecology Center and "Help Line" will make their new home. A large workroom and spare offices will be available for other temporary student services, such as Participation '72. On the main floor, plans call for a metal gate adjacent to the information desk to close off the north wing at midnight when the Union Bldg. closes. Keys to the Unon Bldg.'s north entrance will be issued to ASUU officers, Chronicle staff and "Help Line" personnel to allow them to work after midnight. The remodeling will cost approximately $90,000, which will be borrowed and repaid through a 50 cent student assessment, according to Union Bldg. Director, Ernest Bebb, Jr. Bids will be let out with the job going to the lowest bidder. Construction is expected to begin in June. Remodeling should be completed by September. |
