Show i i rr nm ii i i iinnmipi -. i if 1 , : ' ' I .. fit; 1 ' '1 .J Ute Jazz men hit Festival, sweep prizes The Intermountain Collegiate Jazz Festival held April 20-22 showed the tremendous talents of jazz performers of the University, Utah State University, Mesa (Ariz.) Community College Jazz Ensemble and Brigham Young University. Categories of the festival involved combo, vocalist, composition and band. All four categories were won by University students who will go back to the national festival in Washington, D C. Best Combo award went to Blind Melon Chitlin'. They performed three numbers, one written by Stu Goldberg, their pianist, and the other two by George Sousa, guitarist. Unlike the other combos in competition Blind Melon Chitlin' used synthesizer. Their work involved a lot of advanced techniques not used by the other combos. Students will have an opportunity to hear this group on May 6 in the Crimson Commons. Sally Morrow won in the vocal division, with backup group of Al Wing, Dave Moss, Steve Keen and Dave Morino. University of Utah Jazz Orchestra, Experimental Ex-perimental Ensemble and Rock Garden won in the band division. Under the direction of Ladd Mcintosh, visiting assistant professor, the band received standing ovations. The first ovation was given to Merrill Clark directing his own composition "Schmear" with soloist Bruce Fowler on trombone and Glen Garrett on saxaphone. The second ovation was given following the performance of Ladd Mcintosh's compostion "The Avenging Angel and Icabod Crane" with solosits Stu Goldbert on electric piano synthesizer, Albert Wing on tenor sax and Bruce Fowler on trombone. Best composition-arranger went to Merrill Clark, a second year jazz theory student, for his composition "Schmear." Mr. Clark has been commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose a work which will be given a world premiere. The winners of the four categories will go back to the national festival in Washington, D.C., on May 28 and 29. |
