Show I 111 I WQDYS I By Bruce Woodburv change encompasses here is an explanation of it. A simple explanation of the rule would be this: "A five second time limit has been established for a closely guarded dribbler in fore-court. In other words if a player is trying to stall out the clock by dribbling around out away from the basket a jump ball may be called if he controls the ball for five seconds on the dribble while another player is guarding him. As can be seen the rule was put in to eliminate the freeze at the end of a ball game when one team has a slim lead and doesn't want to give the ball away. According to the people who know, the officials are not supposed to call this rule until the later stages of the ball game. However, against Utah, Northwestern was called for it in the first five minutes of the game. Probably the next step after this rule is the time clock like the pros use. In some ways it may not be a bad idea either. THE LAST WORD: Nebraska, the number one football team in the country this season is getting out of the habit of playing before anything less than a full house. So when coach Bob Devaney scanned the stands and saw a vacant seat he hustled up the steps and asked the lady sitting next to the vacancy what had happened. "My husband formerly sat there," she said, "but he died." Devaney inquired if a friend or relative didn't want the ticket. "They were all at the funeral," she explained. - j SOD: This Friday is the day that Utah basketball fans have been waiting for'all season long. It is tor the day that the biggest Ute, gets agt- into action for the first time this season. The biggest Ute this l season is known as Mark , Soderberg, or just plain "Sod" to ' his teammates, and he towers over his teammates at 6-10. An .explanation is needed for those fans that might be wondering why "Sod" is starting his season 'now instead of back in December when the rest of his team did. The P reason is described by the NCAA as Eligibility. Soderberg was recruited as a high schooler out of Huntington feeach, Calif., by the man they call (the "baron" or in other words ydolph Rupp of Kentucky. Big Mark spent his sophomore season sitting on the bench watching the 111 'great Dan Issel do his thing, '(linking that the following year he would get his chance. beiHowever, the following year he ess )roke his hand in early season practice and was replaced as the tarting center. Realizing that he j vould never get his job back he lecided to go someplace else and or'Jtah was the lucky school to get Uf lim. It was last December that he rps transferred here, and since NCAA rules say that a transfer must sit out a year it is not until now that Sod gets his chance to shine on the Ute hardwoods. Anyone who has been following the local media this week will know that almost every sports show or sports page has mentioned men-tioned something about Soderbe'g's debut. Needless to say there is a lot of pressure on the big guy to produce in his first outing. Knowing that "Sod" is anxious to do well and realizing that he had been pointing to his first showing before the home folks, fans should be ready to see him play well. If however, he happens to get a case of the first game jitters, as often happens, the fans should understand and not get "on him" right off. Big Mark has too much talent to not contribute to the Utah team this season, however, he might need a little game experience before he fully reaches his peak. RULES: A little note for those fans who have been hearing comments com-ments about the new "five second" rule in college basketball this year. For those of you that don't understand what this rule |
