Show The iaws of fate close in Upperclassmen still rejoicing over a retained ll-S deferment may be unpleasantly surprised with some more subtle changes covered in the same Selective Service letter of clarification. Students gained the privilege of dropping their ll-S in favor of a I-A I-A deferment, even though continuing to meet the requirements for the deferment. This allows them to place themselves in the draft pool late in the year, when they would not be called up. An induction ceiling of 125, lowest since the lottery began in Dec, 1969, was also announced. But students simultaneously lost the less-well-known l-S(C) classification and were guaranteed that even if the local board doen't reach the ceiling in 1971, numbers under 125 will be called up the following year. The memorandum, issued by draft director Curtis W. Tarr to all 4,000 local boards on Nov. 11, also ammended previous policy on allowing record changes in birthdates upon submission of adequate evidence. Starting Dec. 10, if a birthdate change is submitted after the registrant has received a lottery number, the records will be changed, but the individual involved will retain his original number. The now ineffective l-S(C) deferment was "extra protection" for the student, should he fail to maintain "satisfactory academic progress" necessary for a continued con-tinued ll-S classification. Under the old system, a student who failed to make satisfactory progress at the end of an academic year could enter the next term of study before hls ri . ! board found out.
