Show JSUU gives Athletic Department $240,000 By DAN STEGGELL i Chronicle Staff UBy a 28 to 10 vote with two abstentions, lie Associated Students of the University if Utah (ASUU) Assembly Thursday night ipproved the allocation of $240,000 to the lepartment of Athletics. fhis was the figure (based upon a $5 per tudent per quarter athletic fee) that was etby Apportionment Board July 1. Apportionment Board had changed the Assembly's original funding allotment of June 21 which gave Athletics nothing. Earlier, the Assembly rejected (14-28-1) a motion to substitute Bill No. 49 in lieu of the Athletic budget item. Bill No. 49 stipulates that one-third of the allotment ($80,000) would be given to the Department Depart-ment of Athletics with the remaining two-thirds two-thirds being placed in an athletic reserve fund. - The reserve would not be spent until certain agreements around the funding of Cheerleaders, Utahnas, Marching Band, Women's Recreation Association or the creation of an optional Athletic fee were met. "The athletic allotment has increased $44,000 in two years," said Barbara Croft (Humanities). "It just amazes me that prices have increased that much in such a short time on steak dinners, motel rooms, etc." "I'm not ready to hand the Athletic Department $240,000 now today or tomorrow," to-morrow," declared Max Goff (Social and Behavioral Sciences). But Miss Croft and Mr. Goff were in the minority. . . "We've got to keep it at $240,000," said Pete Sorensen (Humanities). "We can't reject codified policy." Dave Hansen (Soc. and Behav. Sciences) then commented: "The Assembly has got to do something constructive for a change instead of looking for conflict and confrontation. confron-tation. . .We've got to step out of the sandbox and back into the real world." Debate also ensued around the Homecoming Homecom-ing allotment which had been increased by Apportionment Board from $500 to $1000. The funding figure was then changed by the Assembly's Budget Steering committee to $700. But according to Sorensen, who is also Finance Board chairman, they will give the cut $300 back to Homecoming according to a policy allowing him to transfer up to $500 from contingency. "Homecoming will still get their $1000," Sorensen reasoned. 'The idea is that we didn't want to send back the same budget to Apportionment Board." In other action, the Assembly passed Bill No. 39 giving $50 to the National Student Lobby and Bill No. 48 which gives the assembly chairman, once a quorum of members is present, the right to rule whether or not there is a quorum throughout through-out the rest of the meeting. |
