Show s?-ltii!Ci - Utah's new place kicker Fleming Jensen (90) boots one of his extra point attempts in last Saturday's game against Arizona State. Jensen is replacing Ail-American Marv Bateman as the place kicker. Coming up... Redskins in the winners' circle might not be as easy as was s expected after Washington State's upset of Minnisota last weekend, but Utah will still have to go into the game as solid favorites. UTE NOTES: Coach Bill Meek same day they cut Alex Karras. Dave Walker, the hero in last season's BYU battle, almost made it big on the coast with the San Francisco 49ers. However as soon as Walker was dropped from the 49ers he was signed by Edminton of the Canadian Football League. THE LAST WORD: Game plans can get messed up right quick, says Tommy Prothro of the L.A. Rams. "When you're up to your neck in alligators it doesn't do an good to remember that what ou meant to do was drain the swamp." 1 By BRUCE WOODBURY Chronicle Staff Ithough the Ute's gridiron rec-:d rec-:d for 1971 is now standing at 2, you can look for the digits to i coming up in the winners -lumn starting this Saturday hen Washington State comes to iwn. en though Utah has failed to in a game so far they are a lot ronger team than most experts eked them to be. At the pre-ason pre-ason parties the Utes were pick-I pick-I to have a pretty fair defense, i excellent kicking game, and a jestionable offense. It can be ated after the first two games lat the Utah offense is no longer jestionable. Against both Ore-n Ore-n in the first outing and Ari-na Ari-na State last Saturday the edskin offense under the leader-lip leader-lip of a resurrected Scooter Dngmire has proved to every-le's every-le's satisfaction and a lot of :oples' surprise that it can move le ball and score on anyone (at ast anyone Utah plays this sea-tn). sea-tn). ne of the things, of course, as lyone of 24,000 plus people ho witnessed last Saturday's af fair with the Sun Devils will tell you, is that the Utes are going to have to cut down on the number of mistakes they make, especially fumbles and intercepted passes. The surprising thing and possibly the saddest fact about all those mistakes is that Utah waited until the second game to make them. Against Oregon the Utes were caught with only two penalties, and didn't fumble at all. You can bet that this week in practice the backs are going to be working on ball control before next Saturday. The rest of the game is still as sound as it was predicted to be. Even though the defense has given up 77 points in two games it has done well considering the caliber of offense that both Oregon and ASU produce. And the kicking game, what can you say about a sore-legged punter who averages 53 yards a kick and boots one 90 yards, nothing except that Fleming Flem-ing Jensen, the back-up kicker, looked very good on his kickoffs. Jensen will also kick the field goals until Bateman's leg has healed. At any rate look for the Utes to break out of the doldrums this Saturday against the Cougars. It has made some position changes that have paid off so far. Sophomores Soph-omores Lance Robbins and Steve Marshall, the one-two punch at Skyline High a couple of years back, have moved to new places in the lineup and are showing up Meek as a genius. Lance started the fall as a split end but has been moved to the backfield as a "Z" back, which is Utah's version of a flanker. Against ASU Robbins caught five passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns, which isn't a bad afternoons work. Marshall the former quarterback is now a fullback and after the running he showed last Saturday he will probably prob-ably remain as one. Two former Ute gridders just barely missed making the pro's. Big tackle Gordon Jolley gave it a . good try with the Detroit Lions, but the Lions gave him the ax on the last cut. That was also the |
