Show I Senate tobies tenure "Sl A proposal to change regulations concerning termination f of non-tenured faculty was tabled, a proposal to create an Hi office of University Community Involvement failed and a ' resolution of appreciation to Ralph D. Thomson was passed at the University Senate meeting Monday. The senate also decided to restrict students with 20 or f more hours of "NC" grades, under the credit-no credit f option, from taking more classes CRNC without approval T from the Scholastic Standards Committee and to have the student in each college receiving the most votes from his f college during the ASUU Assembly elections be the student 5 representatives to the senate along with the ASUU President and chairman of Academic Affairs Board. The agenda also included a change in classification of W' teaching assistants a change in the duties of the Curriculum j Committee, a new academic calendar for 1972-73 and new requirements for a Ph.D. in Linguistics. These proposals will u! be consdiered in the senate's June meeting, since the nj meeting was adjourned early at the announcement of the death of Dean Sydney W. Angleman, professor emeritus of Rtf En8M- ts to New Involvement Proposal used sent The University Involvement Committee intends to come tl( up with a new proposal for the office of University sties, Community Involvement. The proposal will be brought up nlin; in the June meeting, according to 0. William Farley, chairman of the committee. Members of the senate felt the s Qj original proposal had overlapping duties of the office and other offices on campus. I The resolution in appreciation to Ralph D. Thomson, (el(J director of libraries, for "a job well done" was passed by concensus. A replacement for Mr. Thomson will be an-j,sii an-j,sii nounced next Monday at an Institutional Council meeting. 1,10111 Debate on the termination'of "non-tenured faculty hinged Jcliti mostly on whether the department should have to prove a mti non-tenured faculty member's incompetence or the non-l)11 non-l)11 tenured faculty member should have to prove the depart-m depart-m ment's unjustified termination. Prof. Arvo Van Alstyne of the College of Law and William Whisner of the Department of Philosophy felt the proof of burden" should be on the department or college Deans Alfred Cave of humanities and William Prokasy were major objectors to the proposal. They argued the "proof of burden should be on the non-tenured faculty member or else tenured and non-tenured members would have no distinction. T.A.S May be Teaching Fellows The teaching assistant proposal, which was tabled by the premature adjournment, would change some TA.s' to Teaching Fellows. T.A.s that work a minimum of 20 hours a week in class, laboratory, preparation, counseling and grading would become Teaching Fellows with 9-month contracts. Individuals hired for less than the 20 hours a week would be called Teaching Assistants and could be hired on a quarter basis. The advantage to this proposal is that T. F.'s would be able to obtain medical insurance, since their job is well defined and their contract lasts a full school year. The academic calendar, which will be on the agenda for the third time next month, has a choice of two proposals. The first proposal is an academic calendar similar to the one used this year and the past few years. Fall quarter would begin near the end of September and last until Christmas vacation. Winter quarter would be from early January to the middle of March and spring quarter from March to the end of May with finals the first week of June. Mini-quarters in New Schedule The alternate proposal would have fall quarter start in the early part of September and last to Thanksgiving vacation. Winter quarter would be divided into three "mini-quarters." The first would be from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the second from early January to late January and the third from late January to early March, third quarter would end the middle of May. The proposal includes Friday in-person registration for fall quarter instead of the traditional Monday registration. This will give the departments a chance to rearrange classes before they start. |
