But I think I made myself clear. What do we want, DDT ormalaria? Both are bad to health. Both are evil, but I'd take the lesser of the two evils. Like I said, Mr. Grundfossen is getting off on a tangent on pollution and doesn't take everything into consideration. He's one-sided. I am against pollution, but not to the extreme where I will damage my health doing so. Calvin Peterson Chrony against students? Tiict Via..ni.nn r f . i Married Student Housing Phase II on Sunnyside Avenue east of Foothill Boulevard, Boule-vard, the University Village Council, which . is the elected student government of the residents of Married Student Housing, feels it appropriate that its position should be known. The Married Student Housing program provides much-needed low cost housing with excellent child care facilities. This type .of program is an essential part of the educational experience for married students. stu-dents. Of the alternative construction sites proposed for Phase II, the southern Research Re-search Park location appears to be most consistent with maintaining a high quality of life for University Married Students while at the same time providing reasonable reason-able access to the University, shopping facilities, recreational facilities and other married students in existing University housing. We understand that in the event the decision is made to relocate Phase II, a Grundtossen on a tangent Editor: I would like to make a few comments on my observation of Pete Grundfossen's lecture April 20 about pollution legislation. legisla-tion. , , , Piist of all, I would have everybody know that I am a cause of pollution. I drive a car to school that pollutes the air, I Wash dishes with soap that pollutes the water. I'm not perfect. I think too many people when they want to correct something get so far out on a tangent that that is more dangerous than what they are trying to correct in society. To explain myself, IH refer to a few comments made during the lecture of Mr. Grundfossen. A comment was made that during a 34 week period, during the spring, farmers have a chance to burn old trees to get rid of them. This put millions of tons of pollution into the air. I agree. Should we legislate against this burning? I and speak their minds as individuals. . Although we do accept the fact that some athletes who were there were truly concerned, we came to the conclusion that the majority of athletes came to the meeting with no intention of looking at the topic seriously, but to poke fun at our guests. Is this an example of the fine "All American Boy" Coach Meek spoke of during Challenge Week? Thais Graham Mae Barela Kyle Thorn Support housing project Editor: Let no one be fooled. Those who oppose Married Student Housing do so because of the materialistic nature of their intent: To have more dollars and cents. They say that their property values will be lowered and their environment destroyed. Hoawash! Their significant additional cost will accrue to the project. It is further bur understanding that because the University Housing must be self-supporting and does not receive J legislative appropriations, the additional cost of the project would necessarily be passed on to the student residents of University Village by means of an increase in rents. Moreover, the decision to relocate would further delay construction of the Day Care Center facilities for Phase II. We feel, therefore, that it is definitely to the disadvantage of village residents, both present and future, to consider changing the site of the Phase II construction. Frundsen Athletes boo Gay Lib Editor: A meeting was held April 21st in Van Cott Hall for members of the Gay Liberation Libera-tion movement to speak to dorm students. The purpose of this meeting was to allow representatives from the movement to speak about their cause and to allow for questions to be answered. During this meeting, a large group of your "ideal boys" (football and basketball players) proved their "masculinity" through their crude remarks and childish snickers directed di-rected to the guests and members of the audience. Working as a team, as they do throughout through-out the year, these athletes encouraged each other to seer our guests and proved they lack the courage to defend themselves Hogwash! Their concern for themselves is nauseating. If the project is relocated, halted further, fur-ther, or even abandoned, the cost will ultimately fall upon the students. Therefore, There-fore, single students, don't sneer and turn your support from married students. If we, the married students, are unable to pay the costs of this ridiculous action, then there is but one alternative area to draw funds-from funds-from you. Your support may best be utilized by remaining cool and yet at the same time, voice your opinion on the matter publicly. We must fight this thing together or we will all have drastic reductions in pocketbook size. For many, it will be the end of their education. There is no intended demonstration for Park City when the SBHE meets there this Tuesday at 11 a.m. Knowing you are behind us is enough to work toward. Gaff K. Dal ton Site change a disadvantage Editor: In view of tire current furor over the proposed construction of the University have my doubts. Smoking, that is every day, in my opinoin, pollutes more during the year than the tree burning. Should we legislate against that? That is more harmful. harm-ful. If we did pass laws against smoking, thousands and millions of people would be against it. Why? Because they want to smoke, even though they know it causes t cancer. I think Grundfossen would be against this because I saw him smoking a pipe. Mr. Grundfossen tried to pass a law against DDT. Do we want that to pass? I wouldn't want it. Why? Because I like to pollute? No. But because I think it is a lesser of two evils. We will never find a cure-all for pollution. If DDT was outlawed, what would er happen? I heard a comment that after the ' lecture by a man and he said in a country in Southeast Asia, they used DDT one year and had 500 cases of malaria. The following follow-ing year they said DDT was a pollutant and should not be used. That year they had over 50,000 cases of malaria. When we try to stop part of pollution without thinking or taking into consideration considera-tion the consequence of this act, I think we're heading for trouble. They got rid of DDT as a pollutant, but I'd personally r |
