'Not interested in ratings BY PATTI FISK Chronicle Staff "Ratings! I'm not interested in ratings! Our standards, well, you can judge them for yourselves." Thus challenged Brian Priestman, conductor and musical director of the Denver Symphony. Utah First Mr. Priestman is here to promote pro-mote publicity for their first Utah performance scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tabernacle. Part of a week-long tour throughout through-out the Intermountain Region, the Utah Symphony will reciprocate recipro-cate by touring through Denver next year. In Mr. Priestman's words, "We look after the public on our side of the Rockies, and you look after the public on your side. So we exchange like this and it's great!" Not Many Young He commented that not too many young people play in the Denver Orchestra. "Most are either ei-ther still in school for one reason or another, or they haven't had the requisite experience to join a major symphony orchestra." "I think a lot of people stay in school too long. It depends on what an individual's going to do with his life, with his music- making, with his music commitment. commit-ment. . ." "I make a distinction between education and instruction-instruction instruction-instruction is being told something, some-thing, but education is being given leads so you can think for yourself. your-self. You should never take anybody's any-body's word for it. If they say it's musically correct, you have to examine it for yourself, to find out whether you believe it's musically mu-sically correct or not. Don't take anything at its face value." Saturday's Program He commented on Saturday evening's program. "We're doing the Manfred Overture by Schumann, Schu-mann, which isn't very often played, which is a deeply pessimistic pessi-mistic piece; then we're doing the Strauss "Burleske for Piano and Orchestra," which hardly ever gets played; then the Mozart Piano Concerto; and sibelius No. 2. I understand Sibelius hasn't been played here in a long time. I think there is a message in Sibelius. . ." Free Tickets Mr. Priestman concluded, "It's an important concert for both of our orchestras because of the exchange ex-change business. We're offering this is my big message of the day-free tickets for everyone who phones into the Utah Symphony Office."
