Sports Editor Utah's Runnin' Redskins are in a most favorable position this weekend as they start their last conference home stand. . The Redskins have an opportunity to move into first place this week, a spot they have been in and out of all season. Standing in the way of the Redskins first place drive are the two teams from the cactus part of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). One of these teams, Arizona State, is currently in first place in the conference while the other, Arizona, is out of the WAC title chase but in a good spot to act as "spoiler." For the Utes to capture the WAC crown, the games this weekend are a must. If Utah can win both games then a title tilt with BYU is a sure thing (provided the Cougars win both their outings). If Utah loses one game then a tie is a possibility, providing they dump the "Y" next week. However, if both Arizona schools do it to us, that will be all she wrote for this seasonThat outcome is not likely to happen, however. Arizona State is going to be out to grab victories against both Utah and BYU on this road trip. Utah upset the Sun Devils, 95-90, earlier in the season at Tempe. ASU will undoubtly have that game in mind when they take the floor Friday night. Even without the revenge motive ASU is tough. Coach Ned Wulk has put together a combination of "fast break" and board strength to make his Sun Devils the surprise team of the conference. Wulk's rebounders are currently the second best board team in the nation, although their tallest man is only 6-7. Leading Sun Devil scorer is Paul Stovall. A J.C. transfer from mid-America, the 6-4 junior is averaging averag-ing 17.3 points a game. Besides being tough on the boards, the Sun Devils are a well-balanced team, which is their biggest asset. J !' j , i ' J i ' I Senior Tom Lee is the second leading scorer I averaging 13.5 points per game for Arizona. I Saturday s game against the Wildcats oi Arizona should be an easier affair than Friday's encounter. Although the Wildcats have loads of talent, they have yet to put it together this season. They have a 6-1 1 post man, Eddie Myers, and one of the best forward lines in college basketball with Bill Warner and Tom Lee. Warner is scoring over 20 points a game and gave Utah' fits last time around. Although he should be good Saturday, Utah should still run away with the game. An interesting pre-game on Friday will feature the Frosh hoopsters against the College of Southern South-ern Idaho, the number one junior college team in the country this year. CSI is currently sporting a 27-1 record and is the scrougae of the J.C. ranks. The papooses lost earlier to CSI in Twins Falls, 80-74, which is the closest any team has come to them at home this season. The University frosh are currently on a four-game four-game winning streak, due in part to the outstanding play of 64 Tim Cockett. Cockett, who scored 36 points last week against |
