Show Classical guitarist to perform School of Music since 1965 and for the last two years has also served on the Brevard Music Center faculty fac-ulty in Brevard, N.C. I Classical guitarist Juan Mer-cadal, Mer-cadal, often described as "the Toscanini of the guitar," will perform per-form Thursday at 8 p.m. in the University Music Hall. The free public concert is among the University's "Sum-merful "Sum-merful Series" offerings, sponsored spon-sored by the Summer School and Associated Students. The Cuban-born musician be- gan studying the guitar when he was five years old, first with his father and later with his father's teacher, Dr. Severino Lopez. He made his first stage appearance at the age of six and gave his first formal recital when he was thirteen. Mr. Mercadal has performed extensively in South America, especially es-pecially in Brazil, where he has given numerous recitals and radio concerts. One of Brazil's most distinguished composers, Ra-dames Ra-dames Gnattali, composed a concerto con-certo for Mercadal which was premiered with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in Rio de Janeiro in 1953. A master recitalist and orchestra orches-tra soloist, Mr. Mercadal is also a noted chamber music artist. When he made his U.S. concert debut in Miami, a Miami Herald reviewer corrimented: ". . . everything every-thing that can be done on a guitar Mercadal can do . . ." He has been a soloist with the Miami Philharmonic, Jacksonville Philharmonic Phil-harmonic and the Fort Myers and Florida West Coast Symphony orchestras.
