Show Movie review 'Statement:' worth seeing BY HD ROBERSON SEE STATEMENT! When we got the invitation to see "Strawberry Statement" at a screening, my initial reaction was mild surprise. From what I'd heard, it wasn't something to induce in-duce euphoria. Even the Time nasty nas-ty mill was especially snide, usually usual-ly indicative of something genuinely genu-inely mediocre. In keeping with Chronicle movie mov-ie revue policy, we arrived late and I'm sorry we did. The flick is well worth seeing. Excellent camera work, good sounds( Crosby, Cros-by, Stills, Nash and Young, among others), a good depiction of the student radical as he really is (which is to say, far from faultless), fault-less), a very accurate representation represen-tation of a campus "riot" and attendant community reaction, and portrayal of a genuine Police Riot (which is not, I repeat, NOT, overdone). Strawberry Statement is based on the Columbia disturbances and reaction thereto. The movie has a decent, if jest a tech schmaltzy, story line which is aided by excellent ex-cellent casting. The acting is sincere, sin-cere, which in this context means good, and very believable those people could be you, man. Simon Kunen, 'the author of the basic book, plays one of the bit characters in the movie. He fits in well, evidence of his cinematic adaptation skills, since the book and movie are about himself main character is named Simon Kunen and are theoretically his adventures. I say theoretically, because be-cause schmaltzing-up a work like "Statement" for theatric effect and dramatic appeal may take some of the fibre out of its backbone back-bone by making is an emotional rather than simply human story. Like I said, though, it's good schmaltz. So see it. If you don't understand radicals, it might give you a window; win-dow; if you are undecided about Youth Power, it might give you the. datum you need; if you already al-ready sit in the Woodstock section, sec-tion, it's good entertainment. Might do to dialate your mind. |
