Show Provost releases statement on Jackson incident "All of us in the University community are shocked and frustrated frus-trated by the continuing violence on American campuses," said a statement released by Provost Thomas C. King. "I am particularly particu-larly agonized that tragic events have added Jackson State to those campuses experiencing bloodshed. The University will fly its flag at half staff until memorial services serv-ices for the Jackson State students stu-dents and I urge all to do whatever what-ever they can to join in these services." Provost King continued with, "Dissent is an essential part of the democratic process and the right to dissent must be protected here. Our students have been committed to nonviolence and except for an unknown arsonist, all have kept that pledge." "We must renew the pledge to exert every human effort to avoid the possibility of armed law enforcement en-forcement officers being called to this campus in confrontation with dissenting students. I have great confidence that all of us students, faculty, law enforcement enforce-ment personnel and the administration adminis-tration can work together for progress pro-gress on the issues that concern us all," he concluded. |
