Show J Dance 70 features some very creative pieces of choregraphy with seventy-eight performers. The concert will be staged Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Dance 70 should be seen BY CAXDY LISII Entertainment Writer When Modern Dance is mentioned men-tioned some people visualize a group of spaced chicks doing their interpretation of a fried egg. The concert opening Thursday night in Kingsbury is certainly more than that. The Modern Dance Department Depart-ment is presenting an exploration in total theatre that should be seen by everyone I guarantee you do not have to be a dance major to enjoy it. The five works being presented offer heavy and light choreography. choreogra-phy. John Wilson has choreographed choreo-graphed two numbers. His first, "Earth, Sea, Fire, and Air," will open the concert. It is a dance of the pagean rites of regeneration, the movement is unusual and the dancers do a fine job of holding to the primitive theme. His other piece, "Traveling," will be the last number on the program. I have not seen this dance, but from all reports it should be one of the best things done on the concert. Joan Woodbury's "Incantations" "Incanta-tions" is an unusual piece, exploring ex-ploring photography, sound and dance. . The musical score was done by computer and the stage set is a series of slides shown as the dance progresses. This is an extremely strong piece that calls for the soul of its dancers, and its earthly force makes a definite statement. Shirley Ririe has done a work that is much lighter. The live voices singing the score are a very nice contrast to the heavy music of the rest of the program. Viola Farbar, guest choreographer choreogra-pher from New York, will present a number that will prove to be one of the most unusual pieces performed by the Modern Dance Department. It utilizes all the tools of dance: Sensitivity, awareness, aware-ness, improvisation, and set movements. There is no music used to accompany the dancers, only the sound of live conversation conversa-tion backstage and the rhythm of the performing bodies will serve as the score. The costumes are colorful, and the lights and staging are very good. I think this concert is a good representation of the talent found in the Modern Dance Department, it is really well worth happening to. It will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:30 in Kingsbury Hall. |
