Show T "Rub Out Rubella" i Volunteers needed for German measles clinic At least 200 babies in Utah will be prevented from being barn with tragic birth defects if the "Rub ! Out Rubella" campaign sponsored by the Ulah State Medical Association Associ-ation and the Utah State Division ct' Health, succeeds. University students can do their part by volunteering vol-unteering to provide transportation transporta-tion to clinics where Rubella vaccinations vac-cinations will be given Sunday. "Few people realize that Rubella Ru-bella (German Measles) is one of the major causes of birth defects," said Carl Decker, member of the Rubella Publicity Committee. The danger to the offspring of women who contract the disease during the first three months of pregnancy (and even later, although al-though the danger is not as great) is devastatingly real and tragically tragic-ally great. The child is almost Rubella epidemics, it is pr; s occur almost predictably i five-to-six-year cycle. The tar in 1965 . . . the next is pred:' for 1970-71. Partial or complete blindness, blind-ness, heart problems, brain damage dam-age and mental retardation are other results. Many times Rubella leaves multiple defects, some of which can't be determined until the child reaches school age, "We, as taxpayers, must pay for these children who, according to the law, must have as much opportunity for an education as healthy children. We must pay for the institutions in which they usually wind up. Thus, the Rubella campaign has the double goal of saving the child from pain and the public from high costs," said Mr. Decker. 1 Presently at least $3,200 in state taxes is needed for a yearly education edu-cation of one child. This amount dors not include the tremendous cost of medical or therapeutic help. When these are considered, the estimated cost totals from $9,000 to $3,000 per child per year-. An average of 14 years of schooling costs more than three and a half million dollars. In Utah approximately 200 chil. dren were affected. Utah institutions institu-tions are now treating 84 victims of deafness, three of mental retardation re-tardation and one of both deafness and blindness, as a result. |
