'University crisis' is Great Issue topic Higher education's ability to meet the challenges of change in our modern social structure will be discussed at the Great Issues Forum, Wednesday, January 14 at 8 p.m. in Orson Spencer Hall Auditorium. Presenting their papers will be Dr. David W. Bennett, associate professor of philosophy, Dr. Larry R. Gerlach, assistant professor of history, and Dr. William N. Whis-ner, Whis-ner, assistant professor of philosophy, philoso-phy, all from the University. Under the theme, "The University Univer-sity in Crisis", Dr. Bennett believes be-lieves that the university has the freedom of its faculty, students and administrators to recommend changes and the ability to respond re-spond to changes in our social situations by instigating new programs. pro-grams. On the other hand, Dr. Gerlach feels that the university as it is now should be "modified if not completely destroyed because it cannot meet the purpose of education edu-cation teaching everyone in our modern social structure." Dr. Whisner sees the greatest problems of the university system sys-tem as the "elitist tradition that excludes deprived and minority youth and the failure of education to produce humane, responsible people." |
