Show Class standing should not determine parking status Last quarter, the Student-Faculty Campus Planning and Traffic Committee recommended the abolition of the distinction distinc-tion between upper and lower class parking. The reason behind the move was to eliminate dissatisfaction among lower classmen by allowing them the same parking opportunity opportun-ity as the upper classmen. It was also felt that since campus roads had been changed, there would be less congestion in the center of the campus when the class distinction was removed from parking areas. The first reason for removing the class distinction from parking is a reasonable one. But in doing so, there will also be a lot of dissatisfied upper classmen who will find themselves walking from the stadium parking lot just as they did when they were lower classmen. Admittedly, it's impossible to please everybody, but class standing should have nothing to do with parking privileges. The second reason for removing class distinction from parking areas (lessening congestion near the center of the campus), may not be as valid as the first. For now, not only the upper classmen, but the sophomores and freshmen will be fighting for parking near the center of the campus. This will only cause more congestion. The parking change may run into difficulty. It is hoped that if things do not work out to improve the parking situation, the committee will reinstate the upper-lower class parking distinction. |
