Show University builds character By Alice Bringhurst The modern university endeavors to provide students with a many faceted developmental experience during the course of their tenure on campus. Great ingenuity is employed to insure that those who graduate will demonstrate the mental, emotional, and physical capabilities which will reflect creditably on their old alma mater. An initial screening process insures that only those with a high degree of patience and fortitude will fill the classrooms. This process is entitled "registration. It is designed to determine individual frustration levels and flexibility quotients, and to work through a system of waiting lines, widely dispersed counciling units and closed or cancelled classes. Those who become discouraged easily or lack the ingenuity to formulate a multiplicity of alternatives in outlining projected class schedules leave quietly without further inconvenience to themselves or the institution. Survival Test Among the students who survive this first phase and demonstrate a capacity for university level academics, there is a reprehensible tendency to cluster-schedule classes--both as to time and location. The University wisely insures that, in spite of this, students will obtain a more nearly adequate amount of fresh air and exercise through the expedient of i extensive class rescheduling and relocating following the printing of quarterly class bulletins. Students are : thus afforded the exhilarating experience of a daily sprint between widely separated lecture locations. he leaves an exam mutteri unclenching his fists and S. Great Specimens This activity also results in discovery ot those with physical limitations who may have slipped through the health service examination without detection. The physically limited will, however, find they can compensate by (a) taking fewer classes to allow more time for commuting between widely separated buildings, or (b) demonstrating extra sensory perception in anticipating location and time changes. Each year new innovations are introduced to follow up on the federal government's drive to encourage physical fitness. The hikes between classes, while helpful, are not the whole answer. Therefore, the parking areas for undergraduates are constantly being relocated farther and farther out in the less congested fringe areas of the campus. The student finds it increasingly easy to achieve the recommended two miles per day of walking and jogging. He develops a high degree of agility as he hurdles open trenches, sidesteps dirt piles and maneuvers his way between moving construction vehicles. The difficulty factor is increased by rain, snow and ice and the result is a proportionately greater degree of proficiency. A Real Test The "mid-term exam" and the "final exam" are the most effective and diabolical character building devices employed by the University. If well devised and executed, they can also serve to screen out the procrastinator, the malingerer, and the coward. The emotionally unstable student will reveal himself when For the student who plans to teach a,,, physical examination is mandatory before h7 enroll in education classes.
