Show Women view own role in modern society ( ; ' 'f V rr r.- '4 , JaneL0be" ,. Mary Beth CawfoT"" - SUCCeSS J"f"lsm . . . inning , $50io00 project By Mary Ellen Sloan Staff Writer The role of women is etermined by the traditional role s viewed by society and by the ole that women determine for hemselves. These views affect heir position in careers and home jves and in their competition with 1 jfli Each woman has her opinion ,t wnat it means to be feminine nd they are as varied as the (omen are themselves. Women's role on a competitive lasis with men has been one of a raditional feeling of inferiority, iccording to Kathy Warner, irman Public Affairs Board. The effectiveness of the woman lepends on the individual but she nust have ideas and she should iot be afraid to express them. If jomen are considered unequal she aid that often this can be used to he advantage of the woman. Women make better "public relations than men." Can't Be Dictator Woman's "place in politics" is as a supportive role to the male but also she is "capable of a strong administrative rolei However, it can't be a dictitorial role." The unbalance on Executive Council in regard to the number of women on the Council doesn't hinder her role as an officer, in fact, Miss Warner noted that "if you want to get things done put a woman in charge." Miss Warner added that in order for a woman to effectively lead a group her preparation for the office must be double that of the male's. She can be a natural leader if she is effective. Miss Warner continued, women are not prepared to assume roles of leadership due to the fact that traditionally women have taken (he backseat in leadership. At a young age the ideals are not pertinent. Commitment to ideals comes when ideals are presented, this doesn't occur in high school. High school is merely a continuation of childhood, said Miss Warner. Paulette Flandro, member of Public Affairs Board, said that in number the masculine element dominates the council. In order to be effective on the council the girl must appeal as a girl or as a "quick, cold logical debater." She noted that the ratio being as it is the women must act as a part of the council not as a power bloc. "The woman's ego is not as involved as the male's is," said Miss Flandro. The woman can be a follower as well as a leader and has the ability to organize better than the male while being sensitive to personalities." I once viewed my role as that of a mediator, the one who brings both sides together. However, she continued, not in this council. You have to take a position." Faces a Lot Miss Flandro noted that her role in student affairs has enabled her to grow and fight, to be lost and to be hurt. The University is a dynamic place and she is "ready to face a lot." Women's role in politics is a "beautiful dilemma." A woman can't be an obvious politician, if she was she wouldn't be effective. Generally, the woman must play a supportive role to the man in politics. "There is always a good woman behind a good man and if there isn't a good woman behind him, then he can't be as great as he could be," Miss Flandro said. In a competitive role, Miss Crawford said the women will always loose and it is a mistake to compete. Women can fulfill a role without competition. Men take a competitive woman off the pedestal. Man is motivated by his ego and a woman's role is to fulfill that ego. However, the man who is exceptional isn't beaten even though he may lose to a woman. Retain Femininity "I happen to be efficient and it may be a blight on femininity," she added, but a career should not challenge femininity. According to Billie Keller, Panhellenic President, there is natural competition but not necessarily between men and women, but between people and their capabilities. Men seem to over compete with women in order to retain their position. In competition with men, Miss Keller claimed that with all qualifications being equal the man would be given the job instead of the woman. Possibly not for reasons of inability but rather for the permanence of the man. Shouldn't Conform An openness in the qualities of a woman determines her femininity according to Miss Keller. A woman should act as a person and not so much as a person who fits into a role. The superficial qualities defining femininity are unnecessary, said Jane Lobell, editor-in-chief of the Daily Utah Chronicle. Waiting. for a man to open a door isn't necessarily a requirement for femininity. A woman should be considerate of everyone. In marriage the woman should place her wants second to those of her husband. She should give a lot but she shouldn't be a slave, added Miss Lobell. |
